" Joe Mason aims to fire Cardiff City into play-off contention "
Apr 9 2012
Cardiff City youngster Joe Mason is hoping to add a few more goals to his tally to help fire the Bluebirds into the Championship play-offs.
The 20-year-old scored his 10th of the season at Middlesbrough after defender Ben Turner had opened the scoring for Malky Mackay’s side.
The 2-0 win on Teesside helped propel the Bluebirds back into the play-off places ahead of the visit to the Welsh capital of Watford today.
Mason is proving one of best signings of the Championship season after arriving from Plymouth last summer for an initial fee of just £150,000 and he further enhanced his reputation after coming off the bench just six minutes in at the Riverside when fellow striker Kenny Miller limped off injured.
“It was a bit of a surprise going on so early, but the manager always says, be ready, you could be on in five minutes and that’s what happened,” said Mason, a Republic of Ireland Under-21 international.
“Obviously I was happy with the goal. I turned their defender first time and it did not really open up so I turned him again and luckily it opened up for me and I got the shot off.
“I should have scored another quite similar one, I really should have hit that one first time.
“But 2-0 was a good result at a tough place to go and it puts us back in the top six which is the most important thing. We’ve got a bit of momentum going into the Watford game now. It’s hard with two games so close, but we are ready.
“I think the promotion chase will be going to the wire. Probably the last game because nobody is really running away with it.”
When he arrived at Cardiff many felt this season might be about young Mason merely learning his trade, but he has surprised many by forcing his way into regular first-team contention and he crowned his first Bluebirds’ campaign with a cooly-taken goal against Liverpool in the Carling Cup final at Wembley back in February.
Mason believes he is improving all the time and that there is still plenty more to come from him.
“My first season at Cardiff has gone so well and I hope I can round it off by reaching the play-offs,” added Mason.
“I am playing a lot more than I thought I would be. When I arrived and saw Kenny Miller, Rob Earnshaw and Rudy Gestede I felt it would be tough, but thankfully it’s gone well.
“I feel I’ve improved 100 per cent as a player. No disrespect, but I’m playing with better players at a better standard and that has helped me such a lot. Malky Mackay has been brilliant too. If you ever need something he’s always got time for you.
“Now I’m focused on scoring a few more and helping my team into the play-offs.”
