" Malky Mackay aims to finish Premier League job with Cardiff City "
Apr 5 2012
Malky Mackay
CARDIFF CITY boss Malky Mackay admits he could have been sacked if his Bluebirds had started the season in the manner they appear to be finishing it.
Mackay confounded expectation when he first arrived from Watford by taking his newly-built side on an incredible run of form which saw them challenging at one point from the Championship’s automatic promotion places.
The Bluebirds also ran Premier League giants Liverpool close in a thrilling Carling Cup final appearance back in February.
It was such a scintillating start to his new job that the 40-year-old was rewarded with a new three-and-a-half year contract which will keep him at the club until June 2016.
But since their cup exploits the Bluebirds have seen their Championship form start to wobble, winning just two out of 13 games, with the likes of previously consistent goalscorer Kenny Miller (pictured inset, below) struggling for top form at present..
Cardiff are still just two points off the top six with six games left, beginning with a tough trip to rivals Middlesbrough on Saturday.
And Mackay admitted: “If I’d had a bad start I might not have made Christmas.
“There are plenty of managers who start off like that and before they are in they are out. If you do start out badly in a new job like this you sometimes find you don’t have as much time as you thought you might.
“It’s happened to plenty of others.
“Expectation is something you have to deal with in football. You go into a job with a remit, with clear guidelines from the people who matter about what you should be doing.
“It depends on what you do, then about the expectations that follow that.
“It’s true that right up until February really we had a period where the consistency levels were just great every week. I suppose in the end things do catch up with you.
“We’ve ended up playing 10 games more than a team such as West Ham. Ten games more with a smaller squad is not going to end up as a massive plus for you. It will catch up on you.
“But right at this moment I’m loathe to look back and think of what if this had happened or if that had happened. Our focus is to try to do the best we can, to be the best we can and not to settle for, ‘oh well, it’s been an OK year.’
“In no way can we settle for that. Absolutely not. The players are in no way on their holidays at the moment. There’s just too much left to play for.”
Mackay admits even he has been surprised by the amount of change needed at the club in such a short space of time.
After his predecessor Dave Jones’ reliance on loan players last term, Mackay arrived in Cardiff to be faced with just 10 senior pros and a clutch of youth players at his disposal.
He had to bring his own backroom staff and oversee a total overhaul of the way the club was run including improving the Bluebirds’ sports science and nutrition departments.
But Mackay believes the changes were vital to the club’s future and said: “My expectations of everyone working at this club are high every day whether it’s the players or my staff.
“If you don’t fancy it then I think it shows up very quickly and when I see that then you won’t be working at this club any more.
“You’re not resting on your laurels here. There has been a massive amount of change in a very short space of time. Of course people have changed, our chief executive has changed, situations have changed, whole departments have changed.
“The way things were done here have had to change and if you can’t handle change you are going to be left behind because it is going to happen.
“We’ve had nine months and I think we have affected a change that might have taken two or three years in any other kind of business. It’s an incredibly short space of time for what’s happened and that’s why I’m so proud of the people who were already here, those players were suddenly asked to do something completely different and I’m also proud of those who have come in and bought into what we are trying to do.”

Stay positive Malky

I guess though theres a bit of forsight in what he's saying. My interpritation for this is:
if we don't go up this season and were not in the top 2 by christmas next season then he'll be finding support hard to come by.

Stay this way, don't ever change Malky! Take us up Malky!
If you fail....well, we've waited 7 years, I'm sure we can wait another year
IN MALKY WE TRUST!

All I want is honesty something he demands from his players. He has worked like a politician on recent comments, like we are unbeaten in four. But failing to say we have not won in four. And his blaming of officials to hide the inept performances. The balance of the team is all wrong and Its Malkys job to put that right.
But some of his excuses and after match comments would leave Dave Jones dribbling with envy

Malky needs to change that's his and our trouble (play 2 up front for crying out loud) . And no we can't not wait another 7 years . Looking over the debt we're build up, we will lose more and more support to Swansea . Who like it or not are impressing everyone with their style and brand of Football and are in the Premiership
We need to get in to Premiership, or we'll just haemorrhage support to Swansea more so with the kids over the next couple of years . Kids don't want to support losers or Teams in the Champ they want to support winners and Teams in the Premiership.
You can see this 1st hand, the amount of people I seen wearing Swansea football tops has just shot up and next year , I'll be they'll be even more ... Times have change and we need to sort it out , pretty fast imo

We would only loose support from the west of Bridgend and along the heads of the valleys... To around hirwaun. I certainly wouldnt allow my kids to support those from the west...Besides what have Swansea done all they've done is have a few decent results. Reading did it, Blackpool, until Swansea wins things or compete regulary for honours they wont take surport from us, the kids will still follow Man utd and arsenal etc
I'm sure Malky and the team will surprise us over the next couple of games.. If not then hopefully with the finances sorted over the summer we can be stronger next season...

Swansea are playing great Football (lets face facts) and are the 1st Welsh side in the Premierships (big difference to Reading ect) and I'm seeing loads and loads of people in the Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil area coming out and wearing Swansea T-shirts . This goes on for another few years and we'll be far from the biggest Team in Wales ...
This season is all but over, but we need to sort it out next season or worse it will get and if we all took out Rose tinted glasses , deep down we all know it . Swansea are living our dream at the end of the day , and its a killer

Yes we have changed a lot in 9 months.
At the start we were playing attractive fotball, scoring goals and winning games.
Now we're playing dull, pedestrian and lack lustre football, not scoring goals and not winning games.
Back to square one if you ask me; next season will be a struggle without players who can add pace and quality to the team.

Spot on . Seems a waste to spend money time and what not , bringing a new Manager in , new players only for the same old story and back to where we started from , right down to not being able to pass the ball

Spot on Smilebit and Danny says.
A rhondda boy took 39 kids to the liberty a few weeks back - fuckin doing my nut in.
I'm fed up (again!) This season more so than with DJ moans -because it was there for the taking
When we limped over xmas into jan waiting for reinforcements after busting a gut early on.
Some posters talk about MM want honesty and hard work - while some of us feel just as bullshitted as we've normally baan by previous boards and management.
Without fans -there is no club.
Sort out the stadium Cardiff (costs/standings and swap ends)
Snd
Sort out your team Malky.
We love the graft but get them to practice passing, keeping ball and shooting on target!
I don't like being behind those west and I'm not afraid to admit it.
Even on here -20% of you regular posters are fuckin jacks. ( Must be your 11 fuckin fingers giving ur keyboards a hammering!!)
We cardiff, we're barmy, we need some fuckin Pace!
