When i was a young lad if i misbehaved my father used to threaten me with this "I'll Tan Your Arse"
ffs. what does that mean?

Might be wide of the mark but here goes. "taning" is the process that leather is put through to bring it from raw "hide" to a standard for making shoes , belts etc. part of the old way of doing it was to beat the hide. so maybee "tan your hide" originated from that. Got a big old tannery at st fagans. could be right could be wrong. hope it helps.
