" UEFA reject Welsh Cup route into Europe for Swansea, Cardiff and Wrexham "

UEFA have ruled out the possibility of Welsh 'exile' clubs such as Swansea and Cardiff taking up the option of qualifying for Europe via the Welsh Cup.
The ban on Welsh clubs playing in the English league representing Wales in Europe has been in place since 1995.
And on Wednesday morning, UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino revealed that European football's governing body executive committee had rejected a proposal that would have lifted the restriction.

Euro draw: Welsh FA ready to overturn 'exile' ban
FAW chief executive Jonathan Ford last week said that if UEFA had decided to give the go ahead, any exiled club choosing to do so would have to opt out of the FA Cup, and possibly the Carling Cup as well.

Knockout: Cardiff reached this year's Carling Cup final, beaten by Liverpool on penalties
Bangor City, current Welsh Premier League champions, are estimated to have earned around £1million from their last three seasons in Europe.
Ford said: 'The proposals will allow any club playing in English leagues to choose to enter the Welsh Cup and try to access European competition that way.

Dilemma: Wrexham could reap Euro reward
'They would have to choose between the Welsh Cup and the FA Cup however. I think it is unlikely they would be allowed to play in both competitions.
'But if they came back into the Welsh Cup they would have a guaranteed place in Europe should they win the cup.'
Wrexham, Newport County, Colwyn Bay and Merthyr Tydfil are other Welsh clubs that play in English leagues.

The right decision in my opinion, for the Swans and Cardiff to drop back into the Welsh cup would've been a backward step.

Thank goodness for that, hopefully ends that discussion.

Also says that premier league is unlikely to earn a fair play spot in the europa league this season which would be a blow to the swansea fans who were getting excited. They'd be a good bet for it in the future if premier league gets the fair play entry again unless we got promoted, we hardly tackle anyone so have an amazing disciplinary record and always lowest fouls committed. Finally the tactics of never getting stuck in all make sense.

 Realistically, once I realised that the Premier league was about 9th place in December then the fair play thing was a long shot. But for me, this Welsh Cup thing was a non-starter from the off for both the Swans and Cardiff. We have both made massive strides since 1995 and need to look forward, not backward.

I do wonder though, if Wrexham, Newport and the others in the pyramid see it the same way?

yeah same, i think it only really benefits us both. the lower ranked welsh sides will be gutted no doubt and i can understand why. but at the end of the day its a choice they made.
