" Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay backs his Bluebirds to keep nerve "

March 17th.
Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay
CARDIFF CITY manager Malky Mackay has urged his players to keep their nerve as the Championship season enters its thrilling finale.

First up is the visit of Burnley tomorrow with the Bluebirds desperate to get their stuttering form back on track.

A 3-0 defeat to Hull in midweek made it three defeats in the last four in front of home supporters.

But as the campaign enters its business end Cardiff are still handily placed for the play-offs, lying seventh ahead of today’s Championship fixtures.

Mackay admits it has been a gruelling season for his relatively small squad with the Scot maintaining only Birmingham have had a tougher time with their Europa League commitments.

But he insisted his players have the resilience to lift themselves for one final push at glory.

“It’s a very busy period,” said Mackay looking to the final 10 games.

“At the moment Birmingham just edge us out by point three of a game as to how many we’ve played.

“They are at 48 and we are on 47 point something in terms of hours played this season.

“It’s at least 10 games more than a lot have played and it does make the players more tired than players who have played a lot less.

“It’s all about recovering between games and trying to keep them as fresh as possible, both physically and mentally. It’s a balancing act.

“But I think we’ve got a group here that are strong enough to see 10 games out.

“We’re two points off fourth with 10 games to go. Would this team take that at the start of the season? I think so.

“We’ve got a target and with 10 games to go we are in touching distance.

“That gives the players great hope and spirit. We will be committed and determined.

“There are going to be tough games and things could change on a knife-edge, so we need to be resilient.

“There’s going to be twists and turns. It’s very much about holding your nerve now, we have to stay calm in the head.

“I’ve got good characters here and we are going to give it everything we’ve got between now and the end of the season, I can promise you that.”

During the recent dip in form some Cardiff players have looked tired and been performing below their best.

Marksman Kenny Miller, in particular, has come under scrutiny with the Scotland striker failing to score in his last 11 starts.

Against Hull, Mackay faced chants from the home crowd for local hero Robert Earnshaw to take to the pitch and he hinted yesterday that he could be ready to freshen things up.

“It is something we have to think about and look at,” he said. “Everyone is desperate to play and people play themselves in and play themselves out of the side.

“There’s a couple who are fresher than others at the moment.

“It is something myself and my coaches look at every time we pick a team.

“We look at who’s fresh and ready, but also who’s in form – and that’s the most important thing.”

As well as a problem finding the net, the Bluebirds’ usually resolute defence has started leaking too.

Eddie Swales ‎"We look at who's in form" a striker in form gets goals and I'm sorry to say even though Kenny contributes a lot to the team he ain't scoring goals and that is what he's on the pitch to do. I would play Earnie from the start and bring Kenny on when Earnie's tiring.

Kyle Brana can earnie really play up front on his own? honestly he would be useless. what he needs to do is play a 442 and have miller an earnie playing that will put the shits up any defence

Eddie Swales Earnie's fresh and raring to play I'd play him and Mason and see how that works then bring Kenny on later

Kyle Brana yea true could do. but i feel like miller along side either earnie or mason would be very interesting, miller got a good football brain on him see. as we have all seen he aint scoring but with one of them next to him they will be.

Agree about the January bit. You think the club would have learned the lessons from PR's golden ticket scam. This has pissed off a lot of people.

It amuses me that he says "we are 2 points of fourth with 10 games to go, would people take that at the start of the season"?

Indeed we would BUT we were not long ago 2 points of an autoplace. We were then coming away with results regardless how we played. Now we are struggling and when you are on that slippery road it is very difficult to come of it. I'm not positive, no where near positive.

A ombination of a bad January window and results on the field. The club could quite easily end up paying for this.

Potentially very damaging, based on current st sales. I get the feeling that a lot of the belief & vision for our future is fading,,, from a large section of our fan base.

Well surely now is the time we all need to pull together and help get our fantastic football club over the line. Just booked my hotel for play-off final………just in case (and before anyone asks, yes they do have a cancellation policy  )

We've had our wobble………now lets push on together!! :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Sorry to say I agree with this statement.
There is a strong stench of bullshit wafting out of the CCS these days, I dont think we even want to get promoted.

We aint going up, get ready for another Championship season.

To true unfortunately... I dont know what the owners expect. It's not the old division 4 for f**k sake.. Get some quality in soon or at least spend some cash on good players, either that or expect season ticket sales to drop...

How is this an announcement? Surely it's just a basic topic that goes in the sticky section??
