WHY IT HAS TO BE MARSHALL OVER HEATON

Thu Mar 15, 2012 10:45 am

Over the past few weeks there has been alot said about Tom Heaton replacing David Marshall. For me, that was just a massive knee-jerk reaction because Heaton did so well in the final two Carling Cup games. In actual fact though, apart from the one mistake against Pompey, Marshall has been exceptional! A bit like Naylor, I think they are judging Marshall on past errors and are being too blinkered to notice what a massive improvement he's made this year (just like Naylor).

Heaton at this point in time is going to be leaving in the summer so again, why would be leave out our regular (and committed) keeper for one that may be gone in 2 months time? For me, they are slightly different keepers but Marshall is the alround better keeper and I've added the video below to show people exactly how good Marshall's been this season. People on here after the game on Tuesday were calling for Heaton to come in and they couldn't have gone to the game because Marshall was the only thing in the way of us losing 5 or 6 nil.

Surely time to get off this silly Heaton band wagon and back our number one?

No complaints from me about Marshall, at the moment. I don't blame him for the performance of the 10 players in front of him on Tuesday night.

Scotland's number 1 and our number 1.

I rate Tom Heaton as well, mind, so it's a shame he won't be playing regularly for us, due to Marshall's form and it'll be a sad day when Heaton leaves us.

Totally agree mate. Prior to the 2nd leg everyone wanted Marshall to play. It beggars belief at times.

Couldn't agree more mate. I think either of them could be number ones, i just believe Marshall has the slight edge on wheaten at the moment. You can't blame Tom for wanting to play first team football though, especially when his stock is so high.

True. I'll always have respect for Heaton, even if he leaves us at the end of this season, if only for his Carling Cup heroics, never mind all the other good performances.

No one remembers Marshall's mistake against Blackpool then (which gifted Kevin Phillips his goal)?

He is going to make mistake, all keepers do.
Heaton has played a lot less games and made mistakes - Palace away.

Both very good keepers but Marshall deserves to be number one for me. Both good keepers though.

Everyone makes mistakes, it's just when a keeper makes a mistake, 9 times out of 10 it results in a goal! Think of all the goals he's stopped with some class saves!

I think Marshall is a better all round player anyway. Malky must also see that. Think of his performances so far this season.
How consistent he's been as well.
Kept it at 3 on tuesday, exceptional against Leeds and Bristol.
Although Heaton has done nothing wrong when called upon either

Heatons kicking is better than marshalls. He also communicates better with the defence.

Marshall certainly started this season a whole lot better than he had been playing, when he had last played for us, but whilst he has made some superb saves for us in the last few games, I believe that his all round standards have dropped since around January!

He certainly made a couple of very good saves on Tuesday (Yes I was there) and whilst McNaughton's own goal was nothing short of bizarre, doesn't anybody else think that Marshall should have come for a ball, that was only four yards from his line

I also think that Heaton would have been quicker out to close down the scorer of the second goal and whilst he appeared to be unlucky with the third goal, I'm not sure whether he did right staying in so far back towards his goal, as McLean appeared to have overrun the ball and there was a possibility to have done better, had he vacated his goal a bit earlier!

Either way, I think Heaton's all round game is better, given that Marshall has been dithering on his goal line for several games now and also appears to have dropped back into his shell, with regard to being vocal!

I thought he started the season in a superb new vein of form, as he always appeared to be quick to come off his line and he also more vocal in helping out the defence with his communication, but unfortunately IMO, he seems to have reverted to the old Marshall, who was quiet and too content to stand on his line!

Heaton on the other hand, has been very patient in the background, has always stepped up when called upon, is a more vocal goalkeeper and more intent on helping out his defence than Marshall!

At this moment in time, we are leaking goals badly, so whilst most posters have been venting their frustrations on the lack of goals scored, I think it's time we concentrated on keeping clean sheets, especially as we haven't kept one at home in the whole of 2012 and I can't see that we've got anything to lose, by making this change now!

whatever, heaton is ten times the keeper marshall is, the saves he made against arsenal in the cup replay 3 years ago at emirates, marshall would never have got close to them, he's our number 1 if only malky would see it.

Yep, Heaton for me.
