O/T Spent a couple of nights in Cardiff

Wed Mar 14, 2012 3:13 pm

I ventured up to Cardiff on Sunday night, with tickets to see Billy Connolly on the Monday, and it's mad how much has changed in the past couple of years. Had a great time visiting a few old haunts on the Sunday, and then thoroughly enjoyed the concert on the Monday night.

But... The only sour note was on the Monday afternoon, made my way down to the Prince of Wales to meet a few friends and then head off to the Motorpoint, after a few drinks, I popped outside for a smoke and within a few seconds I've got a homeless guy asking me for a spare, no problem, it happens everywhere and didn't think much more of it.

A bit later, we went over to the O'neills, as we are heading in, another guy is asking for a pound for the bus, as we got round the corner, another one asking us for 80p? After the concert we went down towards Greyfriars and it happened another few times. I've got every sympathy for people who find themselves down on their luck but it gets a bit wearing after a while.

I used to work in Cardiff and I can't remember it being as bad as that, is it just me with selective memory or has it become more of a problem in the city centre?

There are a fair few people around O'neills that are scammers mate. They ask for £1 or 80p to "help them get the train" or "get the bus" but they take from anyone that hands it to them and go straight to the pub. One feller in particular does it from Queen Street Station all the way down to Central, stopping in every fast food shop along the way.

Yeah, it was fairly obvious they were scamming when we realised there was one by each door, don't get me wrong, we see them in Swansea as well and I don't have a problem chucking an old drunk a ciggie or something like that. Just from my memory, it wasn't a problem in Cardiff like it is now.
