" MALKY WANTS HEATON TO STAY "

Tue Mar 13, 2012 3:30 pm

MALKY MACKAY has praised his two top goalkeepers at Cardiff City, but while one starts against Hull tonight, the Bluebirds face a battle to hold onto their second-choice shot-stopper.

David Marshall has been Mackay’s first choice since the start of the campaign and has rewarded his manager with consistent showings, including an excellent display as Cardiff fought out a 2-1 win at Bristol City on the weekend.

Tom Heaton has seen limited Championship football, but did play in almost all of his side’s epic Carling Cup run this campaign.

But 25-year-old Heaton is out of contract this summer and could well move on in search of first-team football, even though his manager admits he would ‘love’ him to stay.

“There is a consistency to David that you cry out for in a goalkeeper. He’s got a very calm demeanour. He’s very level-headed and sensible,” said Mackay.

“He’s experienced and calm and he gives others that air of calmness too. That’s something that defences need.

“If you have a nice calm goalkeeper behind you it certainly helps your defence and your team.

“David this season, through the work of our defence, has had not a lot to do for large parts of games. There’s various statistics that show there’s been one shot on target against us in a game, but it’s good goalkeepers who deal with things then.

“Other times he’s been more active, like at Bristol where three or four times he showed some real quality.

“Tom is another ultra-professional and one who is very much a Championship goalkeeper. To have the two of them pushing each other has helped us. We will be taking to Tom’s representatives and I would love him to stay.

“I do understand the amount of football he would like to play, but that is the conversation I will be having with him,”

This is what amazes me about managers a player can sign a pre contract sooner or later with another club and leave for nothing becasue the club have let it run down to the last few months so somebody tell me if MM wanted him so bad he would have signed another contract by now simple as that. Instead we get a press release on how much he wants him and how good he is. Come may we will get him leaving for free to another club yet another asset gone for nothing and the reasons why he left all in the press

You think it's really that easy to sit a player down and get them to sign? We may have offered him several contracts, he may have thought of holding it out for a better deal.

Don't even bother with your criticism of the club and their workings anymore, it's getting tedious.

I do know we have let players go and it was stupid. The worst being Ledley when no contract was offered. But how are we to know a contract hasn't been offered to Heaton already and he may not be willing to sign because he wants a better deal now he's heard of interest from Tottenham?

It's harsh to criticise the club and manager when we don't know what's going on with the player. Heaton could sign a new contract today and that would make anyone slating the board and manager look like idiots. Heaton may not sign at all because Heaton may want to leave, players choice of being too stubborn as was the case with Jay. We can't just assume offering a contract means the player is ours indefinitely because there's a lot more to it than that.

Id love both Marshall and Heaton to stay, both good keepers.

To me little difference between them so I think the amount of money either are asking for has to be considered.

Although I totally agree, can we afford to have two keepers on first choice wages? Normally there is an out and out first choice on more money than the other

Loving the speculation with regards to heaton guys ! Unfortunately heaton wont be signing a new contract because it's simple ! He hasn't been offered one. Malkay would like him to stay but Tom wants first team football and as all know DM is no1. Clubs mentioned (all posts) are way off the mark currently and Tottenham have not made any enquiry, a current championship club has made an offer and there is interest from a premiership club but that's it for the mo. Dont shoot the messenger guys ! :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

If Malky wants Heaton to stay then he needs to be number 1, everwise Malky can say goodbye.
