Cheers, the room we're looking to extend is the coldest in the house at the moment...

if you live in a terrace house you can build 50m3 (not squared) and 70m3 for a semi/detached. However you have to deduct any previous extensions from that figure as well - it can also change if you live in a conservation area or if you are building closer to a public highway or lane.
Go onto the planning portal website http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/house there is an inetractive house which explains the rules. If you go via the home page make sure you clcik "welsh site" in the top right corner as rules in england are different. They are the same all over wales unles syou live in a national park but may change in the summer
As someone advised, your local council should advise free of charge (tho it may take a while)
