You do realise that cockles are a Gower delicacy, and therefore a Swansea delicacy right?
Having said that, being a born and bred Penclawddian I'm happy to help you in this matter.. There aren't any factories left in the village of Penclawdd, but if you're willing to travel only slightly further down the road to the villages of Crofty or Llanmorlais, you will find cockle factories that will sell you freshly picked cockles far cheaper than the ones you find in Swansea, or Cardiff markets. I'd say Selwyn's are probably the biggest and longest running of the cockle family's.

P.s, Be wary of picking your own, some cockle beds are contaminated with some form of bacteria which can make you very sick, and I'm pretty sure there's a legal limit to how many cockles you can pick for personal consumption. Then there is of course the dangerous enviroment in which the cockles grow to bear in mind. The cockle beds of the the lougher estuary have claimed many a life. My advice would be to leave it to the experts.
