The 4-5-1

Mon Mar 05, 2012 10:00 pm

We seem to have adopted this system for much of the season and after Sun many fans seem to feel that we need to revert to this system quickly.
My main issue with this system is quite often Whittingham has been played in the deepest role, yes he's probably our best passer, but he's also a major threat further up the field around the edge of the box.

Here goes, I'm ready for a hammering but I think the guy we really need right now is Macca, his range is much shorter than Whitts but when he's played and Whitts has played further forward opposition sides have struggled to stifle Whitts so easily.
With Macca sitting in & allowing Whitts, Lawrence, Gunner, Cowie etc to get forward and support Miller, I genuinely think we'll get Miller back to form too.
Now where's me coat? :o

Kiss or mcphail can do the job.

I like the 4-5-1 but after a few loses no matter what we play people will want another formation.
The diamond worked earlier in the season also.

i hate to use the jacks as an example. but. they played that system. with 1 up front. but they had 2 good wingers in there team, where at times made it look like they were playing 3 up front, can we do that?

Is Macca ill ? I thought he was seeing a specialist.

I think the rise and rise of Joe Mason put the 4-5-1 formation in the air. Where do you play him ? In the top of the diamond with Whits at the bottom make us very, very narrow and we rely on the full back to get forward. This gets shagged when we play an attacking 433 as our full backs are bullied back.

Our problem is the lack of natural width & pace, Conway is probably our only winger (other than Harris who appears one for the future) and he's not likely to burn a defender on the outside. When Mcphail plays the role mentioned above I think it's more a 4-1-4-1. Don't really care what system we play to get a win :ayatollah:

I think he will go 4141 Wednesday. Usual back 4, whitts (1) Conway Gunnar Kiss Cowie (4) Miller (1).

Whitts in a roaming role allows him to do what he wants.

The width problem isn't a new problem though so I refuse to use it as an excuse. Yes ideally we would have two wingers but we have been successful all season playing without them.
We just need the players to up there game and maybe one or two fresh legs.

Whitts isn't a very good winger, he's got the forward play done well but his defensive side of the game is just not up to scratch for a winger.

I was shitting myself at Wembley when Whitts somehow found himself at right back, it's only because Liverpool are absolutely shite that we survived.

Maybe not but but playing out wide he scores a hell of a lot of goals.

He scores the goals but he'd leave Taylor far too exposed for my liking. I feel he plays best as an attacking midfielder that has a pretty broad area of the field he can be in.

I prefer him on the right as a winger so he can cut inside.
Agree better more central, would be wasted wide especially the way we play.

Whits isnt a great winger
He doesnt have the pace to beat a man on the outside
and just constantly cuts back in.
He is superb at what he does now, by moving him it would nulify what seems to be our biggest threat at present.
