Its a little known fact that data is encoded into pictures, by many sports agencies, which can tell where and when a picture is used. If a picture is used without authority many agencies will invoice the person who is using the picture.
Getty are one of the main agencies. I know of one situation where someone downloaded a baby photo from "Google Images" and used that picture for their own purposes. The picture was owned by Getty and they subsequently invoice the individual for around £2000 - as the picture was no longer "exclusive".
