Building for Promotion

Tue Feb 28, 2012 8:04 pm

I've read many threads and comments about consolidation this season and aiming for automatic promotion next year.
Unfotunately this rarely happens. In recent years the promoted sides from the Championship are either sides who have been recently relegated from the Premier league or teams who have a `one off ' good season such as QPR, Stoke, Hull, Burnley and Blackpool etc.
The problem with attempting to plan promotion after a relatively successful season in the Championship is the fact that you alert Premier League teams of your quality players. Having performed brilliantly against Liverpool on Sunday, how many teams will be sniffing around Turner, Gunnarson, Whittingham and probably Mason in the close season. Will these players be able to resist advances from Premier League sides and the wages they offer?
Consequently, in my opinion, the chance of promotion must be taken when ever the opportunity arises. Interested to hear your opinion on my thoughts.

Totally agree. We'll be rebuilding again if we don't get promoted this season and, possibly, without Malky into the bargain. I don't mean to sound doom and gloom, but it's just the way I feel right now.

Don't forget the players are on contracts so if sides come sniffing they will have to play the going rate. Given Malky signed these guys I'm sure there going nowhere inthe summer if we fail to get promoted.

If we are still in the Championship Malky will sell them the dream and players he wants to bring to the club. I expect a busy summer this year.

I hope you're right, mate, I really do.

Atleast now though we own most of our players and malky has just signed an extention so it won't be near as hard next season as it was in the summer to replace any players that do leave! We have a better foundation for the start of next season to build on if we don't gain promotion, than we did this season :ayatollah:
