History will show that yesterday Liverpool won the Carling Cup but in my opinion that bare statistic fails to tell the full story of what was a remarkable game of football.
At the start of the game Liverpool were 1/10 favourites to win and who would be surprised given their starting 11 cost a remarkable £133m to put together, in contrast our team cost a little over £3.5m. Forget missed opportunities and forget thecrap shoot of the penalty kicks can anyone who watched that game honestly say that Liverpool looked a football TEAM £130m better than the Bluebirds.
MM said after the game that he had asked the players to lose with dignity and we did just that, but with dignity should come an enourmous sense of pride, pride for our remarkable manager, pride for our team and their absolutely refusal to give up and pride for our fantastic fans.
In contrast to the dignity shown by MM Kenny Dalglish could been seen running around with his arms in the air when Anthony Gerrard missed, he was celebrating as if Liverpool had just beaten Barcelona in the Champions League Final. Of course they hadn't his team had just beaten a Championship team by the very narrowest of margins but still there was little that could be described as dignified about his behaviour. In contrast Bellamy, who was winning his first major honour outside the Scottish League, was the personification of dignity.
We ALL now need to move on and we on with pride, determination and total commitment for the last 14 League games starting with West Ham on Sunday.
I still beleve we will make the playoffs and when we get there yesterday proved one thing to me and that is we have a manager who can prepare a team for the big occasion and we have a team who can perform on the big occasions.
As for the fans we will ALL be there daring to believe that this will be the year. So Near So Far yesterday now on to the 14 Cup Finals that will take us to our ultimate target.
The Premier League.
