Anthony Gerrard: ‘I have dreamt about this moment many times... but always in a Liverpool shirt’
Steven and Anthony Gerrard
WHATEVER happens on the final whistle at Wembley tomorrow, one thing is certain.
And that is Anthony Gerrard has warned his Cardiff City team-mates they had better not try and swap shirts with his cousin, Liverpool captain Steven.
The pair will face each other for the first time in the Carling Cup final since they were children, kicking a ball around together on the streets of their native Merseyside.
Gerrard, at 26 five years the junior of the England star, will be doing his best to thwart his cousin as Malky Mackay’s side look to pull off a shock win at the home of English football.
But the centre-half, a lifelong Liverpool supporter, admits whatever happens it will be a massive occasion for the whole Gerrard family – and one he personally faces with mixed emotions.
“I have dreamt about this moment plenty of times, but I have always been wearing a Liverpool shirt,” admitted Anthony.
“It’s going to be my greatest achievement in football playing in the Carling Cup final.
“There are players who play in the Premier League their whole career and don’t get to see Wembley.
“I keep saying it will be a bitter-sweet day. I will be delighted if I get a winner’s medal.
“If Stevie wins, he will be over the moon. If he loses, he will be gutted.
“He is the captain of Liverpool and he wants to lift that trophy. On the other hand, he might have a little bit of admiration for his little cousin taking the plaudits.
“Hopefully from my point of view it will be the latter, but it’s billed to be a great day.”
The showpiece event will be a far cry from when Anthony and Steven set up goalposts made from scaffolding poles as they practised their skills and dreamt of one day making it as professionals.
For Steven that came true and then some, as the midfielder, one of the most lauded of his generation, lifted silverware with the Reds and has won 89 caps for England so far.
The younger Gerrard has found his path more problematic.
Told he would not make the grade at Everton, he resurrected his career at Walsall before joining the Bluebirds in July 2009.
Even in Wales his progress was hampered with former Cardiff boss Dave Jones loaning him out to Hull last season.

Can we leave him in the stands, please?

Don't see a problem with that at all! If Bellamy had said the same about dreaming of playing in a Cardiff top our fans would be over the moon. He's telling the truth, not as if he said he's prepared to sit down and allow Liverpool to stroll past him and win the cup...

I'm not a big fan of Gerrard on the pitch, but he seems a good lad off it and I see nothing wrong with what he has said - other than assuming he will be playing...

I got to be honest im getting a bit fed up of reading tony gerrards interviews this week.
If he concentrated half as much on the pitch as he does on the medua and twitter perhaps our goals against would look much healthier.
be quite funny if he doesnt make the line up.

If Hudson is match fit, he and Turner have to start.
It's no co-incidence we've started to leak goals with Hudson being absent.

He probs won't be playing.
But if he does he is at least a 'big time' player that does raise his game for big occasions. West Ham at the start of the season for example he was one of our best performers that day.
