Carling Cup Final: boss Malky Mackay

Feb 24 2012 by Hugh Keevins

MALKY MACKAY looked into the eyes of the people who were offering him the job of Cardiff manager and knew instinctively he could trust them with his professional life.
On Sunday the Scot will go all out to beat Liverpool at Wembley in the Carling Cup Final to repay his bosses for the faith they showed in him.
But Mackay believes the mutual respect he found in Wales has gone from the game in Scotland and England, leading to the collapse of previously stable clubs on the back of what he describes as the misguided egos of owners with no respect for tradition.
Mackay has worked outside Scotland since he left Celtic as a player 15 years ago but his preparation for pitting his wits against Kenny Dalglish this weekendhas been affected by reading aboutRangers and the turmoil at Ibrox created by Craig Whyte.
His memories of the dark days he endured as a fledgling manager at Watford have now come back to remind him of the fears caused when a club loses its way.
He said: “I know Cardiff and Glasgow are twinned by their passion for football and getting p****d.
“They also share a former past that was steeped in heavy industry.
“Coal and steel would once have been taken from the Welsh valleys and brought here to Cardiff to be shipped all overthe world.
“The people who did those jobs had a love for their football team, like the working-class fraternity in Glasgow, and that’s why it’s saddened me to see what’s been going on at Rangers.
“I believe the club will survive because there are too many wealthy Rangers supporters out there to allow any other course of action to take place. They will take the club forward again.
“But Rangers are currently going down a well-trodden path created by club owners who let ego get in the way of good business sense.”
This weekend Mackay the Glaswegian will be the standard bearer for the hopes of Wales’ capital city.
But he doesn’t feel intimidated by the challenge, or Liverpool’s reputation, because of events at the start of his managerial career which shaped the rest of his life.
He said: “I had been Watford’s manager for just six months when I was told the club was just two weeks away from going into administration.
“It was down to me to sell six players in a short space of time to get money in to keep the club going. But then I remember the dark, horrible night in December when the talk of administration reared its ugly head again and I was looking at white-faced office staff who were afraid of losing their jobs and having to go home and tell their families Christmas had been ruined.
“There are chairmen out there who are capable of looking at ordinary people who have devoted 20 years of their lives to a club and simply telling them ‘goodbye’ because they, and not the staff, have been guilty of mismanaging business affairs.
“They destroy the clubs and other people associated with them, whether it’s football-related debt or the local baker who doesn’t get back the £5000 he was due for supplying pies or whatever.
“The chairmen at fault go for certainpolicies that involve spending money they don’t have in the first place and it’s the clubs who end up paying the price.
“I’m not cut off from Scotland. I still get the Scottish newspapers every day and I know everything that goes on at home.
“I find the Rangers situation as incredible as I found the death threats made against Neil Lennon last season.
“But Neil was a stronger man for that horrible experience and what I went through at Watford will make me a better manager this weekend at Wembley.”
When Mackay recalls the changes that have had to be made in the seven months he’s had control of Cardiff the listener appreciates he’s a quick learner.
The manager said: “When I had my first pre-season game in charge the side had three youth team players I had neverheard of.
“Twelve players had gone in the close season and six backroom staff had gone with them.
“My first competitive match was a few weeks away and it was against West Ham live on television.
“I’d looked into the eyes of the club’s owners and knew I trusted them as much as they trusted me so they stood by and watched me sign 10 new players and hire seven staff members to work with me.
“At that point I might not have advised you to stick a tenner on Cardiff appearing in the Carling Cup Final for the first time in the club’s history.
“Now? If the people of South Wales want to put their hopes and dreams on my shoulders on Sunday that’s fine by me. I know these people because they’re the same sort I was brought up with back in Baillieston.
“They’ll accept mistakes but what they won’t stand for is lack of effort.
“I promise them a team who won’t goto London this weekend just to make up the numbers.
“Wembley fever has led to a ticket frenzy among our supporters but that’s terrific to my way of thinking.
“Ninety-two clubs started out on the road to this final and now there are only two left, Liverpool and us.
“I know I’m in charge of a long-term project and that Cardiff won’t be allowed to become one of the boom and bust clubs that can be found all over the United Kingdom.
“Believe me, I’ve been there andI know what that looks like. But we’re about growing a club – not destroying one.”

Cracking report to be honest and nice to read that the club and all it's staff appear to be in safe hands! :D

Just watch a couple of well known depressing posters get on this and the Vincent Tan thread and muddy the waters though! :x

what a good read...really like the man,as said before..he,s down to earth.a peoples man, knows what he wants, does,nt intend to waste money thats been given to him to improve the playing staff, prepared to do his homework on players thats he thinks are required...will not upset the applecart with bigtime signings, which in the economic climate makes a lot of sense..so far the players he,s bought in are doing a good job, their the ones that have got us to the final...if promotion does,nt happen this year, then I think we will do it next year...

Brilliant interview, the guy has a vision for the long term plan that it seems some of our supporters just cant see.

“But Rangers are currently going down a well-trodden path created by club owners who let ego get in the way of good business sense.”

Christ if only we could have been saved that pain as well, thats what makes me laugh when people demand transfers all year round. Thankfully at last unlike DJ we have a good honest managers who will do whats right for the club and now just himself.

If you have an ounce of feeling in your soul, you cannot fail to be impressed by his words. I think he destined to be a managerial great, I just hope he is with us long enough to bring us some glory as well.

Actually. As much as I loved reading that, it has also angered me.

The absolute f*cking wankers who continually try to undermine our
Club because they have some hidden agenda and hate the new fellers
running the gaff need to read that, swallow their pride and admit there
is something special happening at Cardiff City.

Either that or just f**k right off.

Have we ever had it so good at this Club??

Have we f**k.

Unless I've missed something over the last 30 years of following CCFC.

However, to save anyone else posting it, here goes:

Malky is just saying what he wants us to hear and is buttering up
his bosses like in every other walk of life. There is no money, and
Vincent Tan is using Cardiff City, and will leave us in the shit, very
soon. MG was right, Daya was right, Bluebird1977 was right.....
or at least they will be proved right, sooner or later, well, later.

Pathetic Cardiff City hating wankers!!!
