Q&A WITH CHRIS COLEMAN

Thu Feb 23, 2012 11:28 pm

I went to a Q&A session tonight where the guest was Welsh manager Chris Coleman.

The night started with Ian Gwyn Hughes interviewing Chris with a few questions. Chris talked about knowing Gary Speed for 30 years, where they played against each other when they were 10 years of age. They played at Manchester City together before Speed moved on to Leeds and Coleman on to Swansea. Chris talked a lot about his early career which I won't go into to much detail about here. He then went on to talk about management which I think is the most important and relevant to us.

He said the only team he feels he didn't 'light up' or do a good job at was Coventry. He said the board wasn't a board it was a hedge fund and he felt they did a lot of things wrong and made a lot of mistakes. He also says he made a lot of mistakes too and for one reason or another it just didn't work out. But he felt the only reason he got the Fulham job is he was there for years, the Captain and held in high regard by the manager and the fans. He learnt a lot there and felt he did a good job. Then he moved on to Real Sociedad (spelling). He said he felt he did a great job here, he got the club high up the division made a good impression, but the woman who hired him (In Spain they have presidents who hire) was voted out 3 months after he took charge and the man who came in changed everything. He wanted to sell all the young players who got them to the top of the division. Chris disagreed with this. He signed players behind his back and also sacked members of his backroom staff which led Chris to leave.

He then took a year out of the game after the Coventry job. He said he was commentating on a Blackburn v Manchester United game when United one the league and Alex Ferguson pulled him into his office and said 'It's time to make a decision you can go one of two ways. You can stay with Sky and be a pundit or go back into management. If you stay out of the game to long you will not get back in. So he then went onto manage in Greece. He got his Greece team to 3rd in the division two points off the top at Christmas. He said he didn't get paid for 6 months, some of the players and staff hadn't been paid for 18 months and in the end he had to leave, he said it had nothing to do with the Wales job.

He then said the Wales team would continue to play the way they had under Speed, although he was going to be his own boss, he would run his own training sessions and would not try to be anyone else, he would be himself otherwise the players would see through him. On Wednesday he said he would be taking a back seat and it is all about Gary Speed, he said he feels he really takes charge after Wednesday.

We then had a chance to have a photo and autograph, there was a free raffle for a signed Welsh football and a shirt was auctioned (signed by Sam Ricketts) which went for £100. When having a photo with Chris I asked him about Craig Bellamy, he said he thinks Craig is going to stay, they have had a chat and it was positive, he can't guarantee it, but he feels Craig is on board.

We the got to the question and answer session, I'l write down all the questions I can remember. A few questions were from very young children. Including the first.

Q. Will you be asking Ryan giggs to come out of retirement.

A. I would love to have Ryan in the team, if he would come out I would have him. But the conversation would be a non-starter. Fergie is trying to prolong one of his assets and he would never let Ryan come back even if he wanted to.

Q. What was the best Welsh game you had.

A. My debut against Austria. I had played for Crystal Palace a few times up front and we were 1-0 for Wales when I came on as sub. I started at centre back but the assistant manager (can't remember name) told me to go up front for the last 5 minutes. (He was in charge as Terry Yoraths son had died). I then went on to score from 2 yards, nothing spectacular but it was a spectacular feeling and one I will never forget. Also my last game, I had just come back after 18 months out as I was in a car accident. I knew I wasn't the same player and couldn't get to the level I had been at. I was called into the squad against Germany by Sparky and I didn't expect to make the match squad, but he put me on the bench. I think Sparky knew I wasn't the same player and I think I hinted to him that this would be my last game. We were 1-0 up, Earnie scored, it may have been his debut, and in the 88th minute Sparky brought me on and played me wide right, so far wide right that I think I was behind the linesman. I came on for Earnie and the whole place erupted and was giving him a standing ovation, I grabbed him when he came to me and said they aren't cheering for you coming off they are going nuts for me coming on. But in all seriousness I couldn't thank Mark enough for giving me that send off.

Q. (This went on for ages but basically) You said players should play in friendlies, but I disagree, why should player play in Northern Ireland infront of 500 fans, why can't they just turn up for qualifiers. (Very shortened version of the question).

Well why should players get to pick and choose, I want players that want to play for Wales, playing for you're country should be the number one priority. With Bellamy it's different, he has a bad knee and it needs to be rested, but the other boys should want to play for us.

Q. Will you be keeping any of the backroom staff.

A. I think there is a bit of a hidden question there, you're talking about the assistant Raymond, the thing is this is a tough one, with this Twitter thing and his comments there is obviously a problem there. Now if we are winning I can work with someone who may not like me and I may not like them and it works for the team. But this is a tough one with those twitter comments and what he said then I don't know. Wednesday is all about Gary Speed so nothing will happen until after then.

Q. Will Ramsey still be captain.

A. I've spoken to Aaron, and all the rest of the boys and Aaron did a great job for Gary, he's young and only 21 and could go on to get 90-100 caps, but yes he will continue to be our captain.

Q. Are there any of the under 21 squad or younger you see pushing through and making an impression this year.

A. With the under 21s, 19s and 17s we are going to make them play the same way as the senior squad, same system, same style so when they step up it's easier for them to step into the role. I won't single out any individual player as I feel it puts pressure on them. Aaron Ramsey is only 21, but there are others that haven't developed the same and I expect them to come through and make an impression.

Q. Gary Hooper

A. Not eligible I believe, there were rumours but I don't think so

Q. Ben Turner

A. Ben has Welsh heritage I believe and he played under me when I was manager of Coventry, he was young and Raw but you saw he had talent to go on and play at a higher level. So we will look into Ben.

Q. Angel Rangel

Haven't heard about that one, but it doesn't sound like a Welsh name to me.

Q. Where does this Welsh team rank with ones you have watched and played in, is it the best ?

A. Well Mark Hughes boys got to the Playoffs, we also got to the final game against Romania, once we qualify for a major tournament then it will be the best.

Q. GB football team should the boys go or concentrate on us.

A. I wish they wouldn't, but there is nothing we can do to stop them, I can see the appeal but if they get to the final we've got a game 4 days later. If they get picked though they will go and that is their decision we won't stop them.

Q. Best player you've played against

A. Del Piero.

Q. What formation will we play ?

A. I won't change the 4-3-3, it's a formation I have always played and believed in. Although we may change the system with the 3 in the middle, to you play one holding and two bombing on or two holding and the second as a sort of number 10, we will look at that, and have adventurous full backs.

Q. Why are there no games at the Racecourse ?

A. I would like there to be, it's not South Wales it's Wales, but it is a Health and Safety thing and there is nothing we can do about it.

Q. I loved the home nations as a kid, do you hope this continues.

A. Very much so, I enjoy the tournament a think it's good for the boys.

Q. Greatest player he's played alongside ?

Ryan Giggs head and shoulders above the rest, best player I've played with and I believe better than Del Piero.

Q. Favourite player as mine is Scott Sinclair (A boy about 7)

A. Favourite Swansea player or player

Q. Both

A. For Swansea it is Leon Brittan as he reminds me a Xavi and his stats show that (even though Xavi passes forward and Britton backwards)

Favourite player Messi, he reminds me of a young Chris Coleman.

He also talked about great respect he had for John Toshack but when it comes to the Maccedonia game it's us V them and there will be no loyalty. The Fifa rankings it is nice to be so high up, the highest in almost 20 years but it's the competitive games that count, he wil also make no excuses he wants to be judged on result.

I may have forgotten a few things but overall it was a great night and Chris was very honest and open and seemed a nice guy, hope some of you find this interesting.

That's Raymond gone then. Can't say I'm disappointed. The bloke comes across as a spoilt child on twitter.

Typical. The time something interesting football wise happens in my little village, and I am at uni 70 odd miles away!
Fair play to him though, and a good thing for Ton Pentre AFC to have him there.

I'd be gutted about that to be honest. OK, some of the things he's said on Twitter have been a bit inappropriate but he's a high-quality coach and we need him. I hardly think one Q&A question is going to change what Coleman and Verheijen said recently though - that their first meeting had been positive.

Chris coleman

Are you gay? Yes
Are you a jack? Yes
are you going to use sh'it tactics? Yes
is it true your taking the wales job because no club team wants you? Yes

are we going to qualify for the world cup? I dont know but i did have a dream we did

To be honest he spoke about Cardiff in a positive manner saying it is vital for us to also be in the Premier league so the youngster are coming through, it can only be a good thing for Welsh football. He seemed a really nice guy, big bloke too.

Chris Coleman asked my future wife out when they were in Bishop Vaughan school together. She told him to do one, coz she was keeping herself for me. :D

I guess Raymond decided to jump before he was pushed. Everything Coleman said about him last night sounded like he was on his way out.

But I thought they'd both said that the meeting they had (last week?) was good/positive? Bit strange if Coleman said what he said last night, but what exactly did he say?

He said

'I assume you're talking about Raymond. This is a really tricky situation with this Twitter thing. He's done some twittering and his comments are the problem. What he said needs to be looked at. I can work with someone who doesn't like me and I don't like them as long as the team are winning and it works for the team, but if it affects the team and causes problems then we have a problem. It's a tricky one, I spoke with him 2 weeks ago but NOTHING WILL BE SORTED UNTIL AFTER WEDNESDAY, WEDNESDAY IS ALL ABOUT GARY SPEED AND WE WANT TO PAY OUR RESPECTS TO HIM IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE, SO WE WILL LOOK AT THIS SITUATION AFTER THEN'
