FOOTBALL bosses have scrapped the national anthems for Sunday's Carling Cup final between Liverpool and Cardiff.
The Football League do not want both the English and Welsh anthems played at Wembley as booing is likely from rival fans.

Both Portsmouth and Cardiff supporters jeered before the 2008 FA Cup final when the anthems were played.

It is the first time the anthems will not be played at a showpiece final at the new Wembley.

The Football League has a policy of not playing the anthems if a Welsh team is involved in a major match at Wembley.

This included last season's Championship play-off final when Swansea beat Reading 4-2 and also the final 12 months earlier between Cardiff and Blackpool.

Cardiff will, however, be given permission by UEFA and the FA to compete in next season's Europa League should they beat Liverpool.

If Kenny Dalglish's side win, they will earn the Euro place.

But if they finish in the top five as well, the Euro spot will go to the sixth-placed Premier League side.

They were never done for the Carling Cup final anyway were they..? I just thought it was the FA Cup final only.

I agree with this I'm English have lived in Wales for 10 years Season ticket for 3. I hate the anti English songs at the games we all support city we all bleed blue!!!

I suspect it doesn`t bother our players at all either.

It is quite feasible that Liverpool will have more Welshmen in their starting 11 (one) than us (none).

Daniel Mason This is a good decision I'm English but have lived in wales for 10 years. Season ticket for 3 years I hate it when the welsh boo our anthem or sing anti English songs my blood is as blue as yours and I'm going to wembley!!!

Lee Murphy LOL, my understanding is that the boos are aimed the the fact that they insist on singing the British anthem & not the English. Singing the British anthem suggests that they are representing Britain....Besides, GSTQ is a bit boring, if I was English & wanting something to get me going for a game I'd sing Land of Hope & Glory every time.

Paul Ridley Comes to something when more Welsh than English know that GSTQ is the British anthem and Land of Hope and Glory is ours. Hardly anyone in England seems to realise this and even argue when you tell them. As a non royalist I find it a bit difficult to sing GSTQ anyway!
As Lee says it's a bit boring too. I live in France and love their anthem, a real rousing song.

I will be an honorary Taffy for 90 minutes on Sunday anyway. One because it will be great to see a non Premiershit team win something and two, because your not scousers lol.

what is your view annis?i reckon that they should play them both and that both sets of fans should respect each others tune.as that is doubtful to happen maybe its better to not bother.real shame though

Probably for the best. Unfortunate, but there we are. Whatever the technicalities, GSTQ is played as England's national anthem. Some of our fans would boo it, and some of the Liverpool fans would boo ours. Same as us and Pompey. No anthems were fine at the Blackpool game.
