New Volkswagen Golf help

Tue Feb 21, 2012 7:25 pm

I am definitely buying a new / reasonably new VW Golf. I was after a bit of advice if anyone knows a bit of gen with these.

I have seen a 1.9 tdi 08 plate for 11495. Would people recommend that over a newer 1.6? The prices are relatively similar. 2.0 litre versions are a bit more expensive but are they worth it?

Any help would be appreciated.

All these are diesels.

2 litre VW engine is much quicker. My Touran has 1.9tdi engine and is not quick nor economical. 1.6 will probably be most economical. All depends on the mileage you do. If you do less than 10k per year get a petrol engine.

The later engines are more likely to be common rail which are better, the 1.6 is supposed to be quite good if you aren't after blistering acceleration but still fast enough. The 1.9 is quite old now and not as smooth as earlier ones. The automatic gearbox is brilliant too. You could also look at the Skoda Octavia which uses pretty much the same parts and is just as well built as the Golf but cheaper

Can't believe I'm giving car buying advice to a bluebird, but here goes..
£11.495 seems a bit pricey to me unless it's got exceptionally low milage and 1 lady owner. I payed £12.000 for an approved used golf gti from bridgwater VW 6 months ago also on an 08 plate. For that you get 1yr free warranty, free services for the life of the car, and being a gti everything is top spec. Fuel/tax/running costs for a 2L turbo are higher I suppose, bit it does go like shit off a shovel, and a lot of fun to drive. That would be my recomendation. Check out the car review section on parkers website. Great website, and free!

There, I've done my good turn for the day, and can now return to being an horrible c##t haha!

Got a 1.2 litre Skoda Yeti, about the same size as a golf possibly a bit heavier and it goes ok adequate power and like the Seat it's got a VW engine and parts. The 1.4 should be good especially in the Match Trim.

I recently bought a VW Jetta 08 plate 1.9l diesel for £6.5k so I suggest you shop around.

Jettas have same spec but are cheaper than Golfs.
