I'M using Wendy at the moment,she frightens the crap out of me and shes on my side. Had my ex's solicitors in tears the other day. Yes shes's a little expensive but long term will save you a fortune.

My ex-wife wanted half my shit but got nothing in the end. Basically I just strung her out for the maximum 5 years. She can't touch a penny whilst you are still married, so don't divorce her. After 5 years you are divorced anyway but by which time she would have built up her own assets by then. Those new assets are basically yours as well. So it's a case of splitting everything down the middle at the point of being divorced NOT at the point of splitting up. So for instance whilst you are still married but seperated, if she wins the lottery you get half of it. If you run up debts then that is off-set against your assets. 5 years is a long time and your status could change a lot. So could hers.

Im a qualified solicitor but dont work in law anymore. All depends how much you want to spend its much of a muchness to be honest.

on a friend's recommendation I used one of the firms mentioned a few times on here - cost me a five figure sum and I hadn't even got to court, in a very straightforward case just arguing about division of a house and pension

I decided to change when one month's bill came to nearly £2,000, with no court appearances or anything meaty like that

I changed to a Valleys solicitor who charged me a helluva alot less than that firm did, got me a decent settlement under the circumstances and represented me well in 2 court appearances, including having a decent barrister as well.

I can't speak highly enough of the professional support I received.

Julia Richards at Richards Thomas, works out of Ferndale and now Mountain Ash. Her junior is Gemma Collins, both are excellent. They specialise in Family Law amongst other areas.

As for tears, Julia will guarantee them!

Yes I have been there on many occasions and it has cost me a fortune, but in most case the ones who make the real money are the lawyers, my third divorce cost seventeen thousand pounds in legal fees alone, my ex at that time was just out to cut her nose off to spite her face and it cost her a big chunk as well, she would spend a hundred pound arguing over something that cost twenty pound, every letter your lawyer reads, writes or send cost you a fortune, they write to you they charge, you write to them they charge you for reading yours then they charge you for writing to her solicitor and it goes on and on.

Mediation is the way forward if you both want to move on and save money, but when things are raw, then spite and payback rule sadly.

Either way mate, it ain't about being fare, you will have to look at getting used to it costing you either way and accept it, the less you give the solicitors, the more you both have to share out.

And when it is over, don't look back in anger or it will eat you away, keep moving forward and don't think about how much you've wasted or it will do you in.

Yes Gwyn, I honestly think that these lawyers are happy to see you going hammer and tong at each other because the more you argue the more they get. I'm willing to bet that if a couple had no house or any other assets their divorce would be over really quickly and cheaply simply because the lawyer wouldn't have a honey pot to drink from.

I did my divorce myself, that saved me load's, filed for divorce. I went to the solicitor to get some legal advice as we were only married for 5 years, only her kids from previous. I was better walking away she advised. I had my own house that I rented out and lived in the marital home (her own house from past).
I would see a solicitor for advice and weight much you think you will come away with.
If you have Kids they will come 1st. If you goto court don't argue with judge as you will lose the percentage they offered.
My mate used a solicitor he lost more than he gain, most of the money when to solicitor fee's and he came away with nothing. Once you start using a solicitor it will get costly.
