Social networking

Tue Feb 07, 2012 9:12 pm

Sorry if a bit off topic. Let me ask you this via the social network ;)

Is social networking ruining proper conversation and chat?

Is it spoiling Face to face chat??

I belive in message boards, face book twitter ect.. As I have met some great people because of it. Met some funny and mad people of here!!

But can't help thinking people are more likely to face book someone! Or text them than actually pick up the phone, or speak face to face!!

Not good for our kids!! Imagine a life without proper socialising and just speaking via computers!!

That's the way it's going to end up!! Is it bad? Is it a good thing?

Thoughts??

The Internet generally has made people fat and obese ---- the world of tw@tter and facebook has generated a generation of morons who can't have a face to face conversation.

I remember playing football on Llanrumney school fields with a load of Pentwyn kids against a load of Llanrumney kids....
And about a week later playing again on pitch next to Pentwyn lesuire centre...

We all though it was great( sort of home and away thing ) scores were like 11-6 and 14-9 (lol)...
But there was no Internet to set it all up, it was all done by word of mouth..

I love Facebook/Skype/tweeting etc etc but I fear in 5-10 years time kids won't be telling these types of stories...

I don't mind Facebook, Twitter etc. But I hate the ones who never post, comments etc on either, but instead just stalk everyone on there. I think people allow Facebook to take over their lives too much.

I asked myself last night actually, without Facebook, How would I approach a woman? I think 90% of the girls who I've been in a relationship with is because of facebook... Even asked my Ex the same question and she said the same. Even though we were both at the same school, and liked eachother, we still got talking through MSN or Facebook.

I made this very point to my dear friend Ninian Sheep the other night.
I think he called me a Dinosaur along with other things because I said I was too old for this facebook shite.
I would rather spend quality time face to face with mates down the local and have a convo over a beer. Why the f**k would I want to sit behind a screen and *like* this and *like* that??
Another issue is lazy parents letting the kids sit on the computer for hours on end just so they can have a hassle free peaceful evening.
No wonder most kids are fat lazy slobs these days, who wouldnt know a days work if it smashed them in the mush!!

Very good point there mate. Gone are the days you would test the water with a sneaky finger behind the bike shed.

To answer the original question.....yes.

I have worked with teenagers for 20 years. With the development of texting and social media the ability for this generation to communicate verbally is non-exsistant. Of course I believe the new forms of communication will become the new norm.
Therefore does it matter that communication skills are lacking? Probably not the world is going digital like it or not.

More importantly the internet and social medai effect on society is staggering....obesity, attention disorder, lack of any real research skills, and the worst is the effect it has had on marriage....think of all the people you would have never spoken to again if it were not for facebook? That's not nessecarily a bad thing, but I know of at least 3 marriges in my community that have died because of ex boy/girl friends finding their ex's on line. 20 years ago this was not a problem.

(As a kid & still today) I was/am happy in my own little world, don't go out of my way to make conversation face to face. I generally try to avoid using the phone. Text/Email/Twitter are God sends <-- I'm a 31yr old tech head.

I'm terrible at keeping in contact with people. Family all live up North, I moved away 12yrs ago. Rarely speak to my sister (not for bad reasons) & folks maybe once a month - via phone, hate having 'the silence', so wait till phoning with something to say.

Having 3kids takes the pressure off us to make conversation when visit/have visitors! They all take after my wife, more social confidence...

In a nutshell, Social Networking/tech has made my life easier, wish I had it in the 90s when at school/college.
