South Wales X1 V Man Utd

Fri Feb 03, 2012 6:24 pm

First post, and I am a Swans fan, but not posting anything about that.

Back in the 70's I lodged in Canton and Grangetown for a year with my job, and went to Ninian a few times (Yeah I know) saw Laurie Cunningham with Orient there and a few others, can't remember details really. But I also went to a game as above.

I cannot remember the line ups but remember the Greenhoff brothers playing. Anyone on here go to that game and remember a bit more, I posted on The Swans site but no reply, it was a week night but there was a good crowd.

Think South Wales won 1 - 0

I was there on my own that night and stupidly wore my welsh scarf(red with a yellow & green stripe) but in the dark it looked like a man u one.walking to the ground from central station i got set upon by some city thugs who ripped it off me & give me a bit of a shiner,i was a bit shaken up but got to the ground where i met up with some mates,i noticed the thugs by a burger van and they had the audacity to give me back my scarf cos i wasnt a manc,i learnt a lesson that night tho(only wear a blue scarf)

Think from the cewnty Gary Plumley. Brian Clark , Don Murray , Gary Bell. Think united won 2.1
Around 15000.

Will never forget the the generosity shown by then city manager Jimmy Abdrews who brainchild the match was
If that game hadn't happened. The cewnty wouldn't have had the famous 79/80 season

Thanks Jim

Definitely 1 goal, I think to S Wales, it must have been 76/77 as those were the only years I stayed in Cardiff.

NO a bit later 76/77. Looking at the two sides though I wish it had been.

This was a united line up of Greenhoffs, I think Buchan, Gordon Hill etc.

I was there - I played for Cardiff boys and we were invited to meet all the players in the changing room before the game - got all the autographs of a great Man U side ( manager Tommy Docherty ) but was more interested in being in the City changing room, met Dwyer,Healey,Buchanan, etc
Sat in the Canton stand with my old man during the game and the Man U fans behind us got a broken nose during the game due to some City fans coming into the end - they were shooed out by some steward who was dressed like Blakey from On The Buses who said something like 'come on now, we don't want your sort in here' - and they went !

I was there, the match was played on 8th December 1976, & all proceeds were in aid of Newport Co.
The line up was Man U; Stepney, Roche, Forsyth, Houston, Nicholl, B. Greenhoff, Buchan, Daly, Albiston, McCreery, Macari, Coppell, McIlroy, J. Greenhoff, Pearson, Hill, McGrath.

South Wales XI; R. Healy, G. Plumley, P. Dwyer, D. Murray, A. Larmour, D. Bartley, R. James, A. Campbell, J. Buchanan, D. Livermore, A. Curtis, B. Clark, T. Evans, P. Sayer.

Ref was Clive Thomas.
South Wales won the game 1-0. :old:
