If by regularly you mean 75% of a season on a consistant basis, then I'd seriously doubt it. Never say never in football, unless we ended up like Man City/Chelsea and had a massive buy-out with £100's of millions invested (that's a pipe dream though.).
Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:34 pm
nope 40,000 maybe a maximum for me. We have quite a big fan base across Wales and England and a small base in Malaysia (from what i've herd) but we would have to be come a regular contender for the PL imo

Oh by the way, the other day wnen you said I was wrong with our ticket sales, It was Barrie from ccfc who was wrong and later changed it all to approx and up to.

Realistically I feel we could fill berween 45/50k. Also depends on how the team are performing!!
Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:36 pm
ATM we cant fill a 26,000 seater, so we'd have a very small chance of getting 30,000 in a 60,000 seater. However if we got into the top 4 of the Prem, regular contesters in the Champs league etc.. we'd probably still only get 40/50,000. To fill it we'd need to be like Man Utd or Arsenal.
Although I do think that in 2/3 years we will have a 35,000 seater
Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:39 pm
Really can't see it. Even 35k seems a way off at the moment even with promotion.
Arsenal have much bigger catchment area (in the millions) with a long and illustrious history of success, and there's always loads of empty seats there.
Man City with all their millions and potential will struggle to fill 60k according to my Man City mate who is a ST holder.
So for me, no. However, come what may, I'll be there.

I think every city fan dreams of stuff like being in a soldout 60,000 seater cardiff city fc stadium(bet the stewards would still be twats tho)lol
Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:49 pm
In my opinion No.
Think 40-45k max, but we'd have to be an established Prem team and in Europe.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:49 pm
Could we be as big as either Newcastle or Sunderland (52,000 & 47,000 seater stadiums)?
I can see no reason why not if we continue to grow at the rate we have over the past 10 years.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:52 pm
If we were playing Man City or Liverpool next Tuesday instead of Palace we would have sold out that game by now, however it looks like we still have 2,000+ to sell which sort of answers your question.
Quite how many of the PL we could attract big crowds against is anyones guess but I think the current 26,000 capacity won't be enough, even with the 2nd tier in place I don't think the 35,000 capacity would be enough.
But 60,000 crowds represent a very big increase but having said that I remember loads of times Ninian Park had 50,000+ attendances so we do have the fan base, even if those attendances were a long time ago.
How many tickets could we have sold for a Cup Final or Playoff final ? I bet there will be people on here begging for tickets if we beat Palace next Tuesday night.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 3:54 pm
I would love to think we could but my head says that will never do it I really don't see us as a big club Very few teams get above the 5% of their catchment area so can't really see it happening
I always applaud small clubs like Burnely ,Norwich Wigan who percentage of population crowds are well above that average .
I would love it if we could but as many say we can't sell out for a semi final what hope of 60,000
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:00 pm
We can dream and say one day we'll be competing with Man Utd and Chelsea
etc at the top of the Premiership. then perhaps we could realistically fill up a
35,000-40,000 seater stadium. But not week in week out. We have to accept
that Man Utd, Arsenal, Newcastle, Liverpool have a fan base far greater than
ours. these have been successful teams over the last 50 years. We have not.
To get from 3,000 crowds to 30k, 40k crowds would be a phenomenal success in
its own right.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:01 pm
Love to see that, but just can't imagine that we'll ever fill a 60,000 seater stadium on a regular basis. If we become Premier League regulars, I think the best we could get would be 40,000.
Personally, I think football is going to see a downturn in crowds over the next year or two, what with the current economic situation. If that happens, then people might get out of the football habit and crowds might be lower for the forseeable future.
The days of huge football crowds around the UK on a regular basis have long gone. They are in the history books, from the days when my father and grandfather used to be supporters.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:06 pm
Sorry to say it but no!!!!
40000 maybe at big games but as a club to reach 25000 mark is good going, considering what we used to get, don't see where the other 35000 would come from!!
To much love for the oval ball shaped game me thinks!!!

Http://www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk/page/New ... 68,00.html still says approximately 22000 sold inclusive of palace fans. Nevertheless its still going to be close to a sell out, I always thought it would be, no matter the first leg result...
Whats your opinion on a 60000 seater anyway?
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:21 pm
Nope not a chance!
If we were able to stay in the premier league for a good couple of seasons maybe 35k at max.
Season and Single ticket price's would probably go up because were in the prem. People will just buy for the bigger games.
If ticket prices went down considerably. Then maybe we'd get bigger crowds in the prem. As of today dont think attendances will change to much.
I would however like to see 60k and not just ours but alot of stadiums
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:33 pm
No because we can not sell out for a semi final cup games that says it all, about are fan base.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:39 pm
Maybe for man united and top 5 yes but if we were in prem the fans would not turn out for the blackburns of the world - we have potential for one off big crowds say a wembley final etc BUT not on regular basis - Cardiff population compared to london and manchester and birmingahm etc is a lot smaller as well..
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:45 pm
This is what I wrote in another thread on this board and I stick by it,
I think you would have one hell of a surprise, If City were to get to the prem and we could stay there for say 2/3 seasons and were playing good football. We would start to pull much more in. Now if we got into the top 4/5 and still playing good football and we had a few big names I think you would fined people coming out of the woodwork to City ground and all them kids you see now walking around with Pool & Gunners & Man U shirts on ,would now be dumping them shirts for the Bluebirds shirts. Many many years ago City could pull 40,000 + now in the City of Cardiff we have many more people living here and just out side the City. 60,000 ? we wouldnt be too far away.
I would also add , I had been at the old Ninian Park when we had croweds of around 20?30,00 and City have had as much as 57+,000 which is on Record , but infact was much more near 62,000 but the ground was not allowed to hold that many so the true attendence was kept down. and as I say Cardiff and the valleys has many many more people now, which is only really waiting for the big times to come back, then so will they .
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:48 pm
Not a hope in hells chance....We'd do probably 40,000 against manuere chelski liverpool, even then id say 10%-15% would be plastics supporting the away side.
There isnt the money in south wales for starters and we certainly havent the global fanbase to make up for it like the big three have.
The germans have it right, charge smaller amounts and get huge crowds.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:49 pm
This conversation actually came up after a city game last season, and I was accused of not being a true city fan becuase I didnt think we could be as big as Man United.
Cardiff have never in there history had 60000 fans follow them anywhere. Even when Ninian was at its largest the record attendance was 57,000 for a league match. How much Id love to beleive we could sell out 60,000 every week the reality is we never will.
I think we cannot forget where we have come from, 2,500 in old Div 4, losing to non-league in the FA Cup in front of 1,500 at ninian.
If we got up to 35000 every week that would be amazing! and I believe that is achieveable and sustainable for the Bluebirds.

Read it carefully, When I put out 19,900 odd, Barrie 12 hrs later rushed out 22,000, then was made to change it to 22,000 approx. remember he might work for the club, but that does not always guarantee its right. He also originally put Pompey sold 2,000 tickets and then was told to change it, they will bring 600-800.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:58 pm
My honest opinion is just no. Even if we were in the champions league year after year I still dont think we would, not on a regular basis anyway.
If you think back to before Sam bought the club, we had a couple of thousand fans and I bet everyone of them would have said if we got to the Championship and was fighting for promotion year after year then we would sell out every week but we havent been.
Problem is fans become complacent no matter what league, when its new and exciting its all good at well but once we have played teams a number of times fans will once again start saving for the bigger games.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 5:00 pm
I was in a crowd of 51,000 at Ninian Park back in 1972. I have always dreamed of seeing that again. It is not going to happen at NP but I would accept CCS as a good second best.
Do I believe it will happen? It could get close if we get to the top.
Shame really that this 60,000 is in doubt due to all these fast franchises opening around the stadium. I hear we had to do this for our short term survival. Well someone please tell me how this saved us as from my understanding this did not stop the tax man taking us to court. If I recall right it was only the possibility of the Malaysians coming on board that gained us more time so therefore guaranteed our survival.
i wonder what the real reason was for selling out to the franchise guys?
Wed Jan 18, 2012 5:08 pm
Was brought up watching the team from 1965 and remember Real Madrid and was at the 55000 against Arsenal in the FA Cup and 35000 for a 3rd division match against Hereford and my impression then was we could attract a 60000 crowd on a regular basis, however recent seasons has shown us we are living in cloud cuckoo land if we think we could. Cardiff Blues can get 35000 plus for big games but on a regular basis look at them. Where are the 35000 plus that went to the Millennium Stadium and Wembley because there are not rushing to see Palace next week. So the answer to the question is we could on the odd occasion but you do not want to be playing in quarter empty stadiums like Coventry every week. 30k maximum I say

Well whoever accused you of not being a true city fan because you don't think we are as big as Man U is a knob The facts are we are not but that does not matter You are a city fan and that is all that counts

The Gunners game was over 55,000 it was printed at 57,890 I think, but the truth was the crowed was over that and went into the 60,000+ They reckon it was more like 62,000 But the true Records was kept lower cos of Insurance and Police . But like you I was going to Cardiff games back in the 62/63 and some games earlyer than that.
Wed Jan 18, 2012 5:22 pm
One thing more, on match days or nights there were well into or over 100 or so guys use to jump the walls, and guys on the turnstile use to keep there foot down and let about 5 at a time in, but it would only clock up 1 there by they could keep the rest of the money. This went on all the time. so 100s of people would be inside that never was acounted for.

good old days
