any views on the rules at the moment? :|

It's to do with refereeing and I think it's disgusting that players are getting sent off for not even making contact with their opponent.

In my view, if a player lunges in two footed AND catches the opponent, then yes fair enough a red card should be shown.
BUT, if a player lunges in with two feet, wins the ball and not caught an opponent, then definitely not a sending off (like Vincent Kompany's challenge Sunday).

It does need to be cleared up though, no doubt about it.

Refereeing has gone down hill and they seem to be the centre of attention all the time, which could slowly kill the beautiful game.

i think if a player lunges he should be sent off if he wins the ball and there wasnt much malace for instance just studs showing referees should sometimes see common sense but the problem is at the moment the refs are not consistant look at glen johnson against man city that was much worst than kompanys

Frank Lampards tackle against Wolves was far worse than Vincent Kompany which IMHO didn't even warrant a booking but Frank Lampard didn't get sent off because 'he's not that sort of player' which means that referees can use their discretion when appropriate

I think it's safe to sum it up as referee's are way too strict nowadays, players are even being penalized for having more strength than their opponent whilst battling for the ball. FIFA definitely needs to have a look into these decisions and come up with new laws for tackling, what should and shouldn't be card offences. Simple as! :P

As someone who has suffered from knee problems following a two footed challenge I am glad to see players sent off for going in excessively.

If Kompany was half a second later he could have broken Nani's leg with a challenge like that, there is no need at any time to go in for a ball like that which could endanger an opponents safety. That is a red card every day of the week which is why it was punished. The only person to blame for this is Kompany for making that challenge. In fact I think he should have had a 5 match ban for having the cheek to appeal.

Same goes for Spearing a few months ago, no need to go in for the ball like that and he was not in control. Off you go.

Its ridiculous to suggest if they don't make contact with the player they shouldn't be sent off.....does that mean if a player takes a swing for another but misses it's ok???

I seem to be missing something here, since when have you been allowed to tackle with both feet? Kompany's tackle/challenge has been a red card offence for nearly 20 years, the opponent should not be carried off in a stretcher for this kind of challenge to be punished with a red card.

So you are right in a sense. It did not warrant a booking, it warranted a red card.

Kompany's definately a red card, It was only because Nani jumped up quickly he avoided a serious injury.
Johnson should have gone as well Imo.

How much of that is luck though? if your lunging in with two feet off the ground then the player is then out of control of his actions while in the air. Kompanys tackle turned out to be a great tackle but a second earlier or later and he would have snapped Nani's leg, that is why I believe the tackle is illegal in the game and the reason it was a sending off.

The other problem is consistency, as mentioned Lampards was a certain red card also.

IMO the biggest problem is the complexity of all the rules, I mentioned this in a thread about offside not long ago. I dont believe players and managers are totally sure of the rules anymore.

Turner has been in some crunching tackles and always times them to be fair to him!

Ashame that if its 2 feet of the ground its a straight red half the time. If the player is not hurt or even touched then carry on with the game. But everyone says 'If he did catch him it could end up in a serious injury' < If it f**king happens then it happens. If a players career ends over it then it ends unfortuntley. :ayatollah:

So if we lose miller, mason and witts to two footed challenges it's just a case of getting on with it?
Fair play that post deserves an award

This is why football gets abused because of the less physical side to the game

It is a physical game, it is a mans game in which you will find more hospitalised injuries in football than you will for egg chasing. But theres no need to endanger an opponent just to win a nonsense ball.
