Does it really make a difference?

Thu Jan 12, 2012 4:57 pm

Reading the posts about how our supporters can be the 12th man against palace and cheer us on to wembley reminded me of the maracana stadium in Brazil for the 1950 world cup final game against uruguay when a record crowd of 200,000 turned up and this not the rich carnival crowd you see at away games but the fanatical masses that live in the slums of brazil.
RESULT= Brazil 1 Uruguay 2
more or less on a par a few years ago when our supporters were banned at wolves we gained a rare 1-0 win so maybe we should all rethink our strategy and just sit in silence and let palace fans do all the singing and ruin their clubs chances.

I fully believe it can help and players have said the same before.

My worry is if things aint going right straight away a lot of our fans change instantly from support to doom, gloom and abuse

Just look at the FA Cup match against Leeds in 2002. Sheer intimidation is the only reason we won that IMO :ayatollah:

Despite being the world cup final Brazil only had to draw to be champions and of course Brazil crashed out in similar fashion in 1982 when Zico, Socrates and company only needed a draw against Italy. Luckily for us Palace only need a draw in the second leg. :ayatollah:

That's the trouble with some of our fans when things aren't going well.....the atmosphere becomes so tense and negative, I'm sure it rubs off on the players

One of the factors in last seasons failure to get promoted

Completely agree polo, it was actually unconfortable to be in the stadium at times last season, so tense it was not enjoyable

Even away some games, Palace away although a brilliant trip, inside the ground it was horrible. Me and my mates had to move twice because of the idiots giving the team abuse all game at Shelhurst Park.

I agree with both those comments Luke.

one minute theyre world beaters the next theyre not fit to tie your grandmothers shoelaces
unfortunately because football fans are so fanatical and passionate, their emotions run to both ends of the spectrum and back, within minutes. thats why we love it so much
but it would help to be more supportive. i know id rather have some crowd support behind me than not, only when its tense in a big game can it be a hindrance ie reading last year when we went 1 down, etc or the collective groans of 35k people when bothroyd went off vs blackpool

I can honestly say I've never booooed a City player or given them any verbal...although those comments were severly tested last season and the season before when certain players looked like they'd rather be anywhere rather than on the pitch.
I believe a good atmosphere does give our players a boost and negative comments do the opposite.

While I agree the atmosphere against leeds was great I was also there as a 10year old boy in 1972 with 46,000 equally passionate but double in numbers city fans I can still remmember the
electric charged atmosphere
the quagmire pitch which was in our favour
the non-stop deafening noise
Result lost 0-2
