A forum for all things Cardiff City

Palace fan not intending to cause mischief, just wanted to give you my thoughts on the game last night.
Firstly, you have some very talented players. I thought Joe Ralls was excellent, which seems in contrast to some of your views having briefly read this board! However, he did waste a few good opportunities to stick the ball in the back of the net and obviously that cost you last night. Whittingham is such a dangerous player, likewise is Kenny Miller. Neither of them really played to their abilities last night, which was fortunate for us.
The game itself was a tense affair. I noticed one comment saying that our tactics were because we were scared of you. Sorry to disappoint but that's the style of play we have now, and it wasn't unique to your team. We play with two defensive minded midfielders, whilst Zaha is used on the break to take pressure off of our defence. Ambrose is in the squad because his passing and set pieces are game changing when he gets them right. You started off well, dominating the first 20 minutes or so, whilst we gave away possession cheaply, but you failed to capitalise on it and take your chance to score early on and quieten our raucous(sp?) home crowd. Gradually we began to come back into the game and threaten you, but Murray was isolated up front and lacked control. I felt that you were lucky to get away with numerous fouls on Zaha who was "just too good for you" as we sang. When I say, get away with, I mean the fact that Mike Dean refused to show a yellow card which meant that your players were not afraid to foul him to stop him getting anywhere. Then of course our goal came, an Ambrose free-kick which your 'keeper came for and missed. One of those things really, if a 'keeper comes for the ball then he really has to make it his own and get some sort of contact on it otherwise he's in trouble.
After the goal, we just kept our shape with our two defensive midfielders pushing your players back when you had the ball. Again, you threatened, but lacked a cutting edge. Your supposed disallowed goal, as mentioned by another Palace fan, wasn't a disallowed goal at all, because the ref blew his whistle long before it went in the net. If that was the other way around I imagine us Palace fans would be pissed off. However, the fact of the matter is, you just cannot go near the 'keeper these days in modern football. The amount of protection they get is arguably absurd, but your players knew this, our players knew this, and so did your manager. Also, your player handballed it prior to the corner, and then when the shot came in despite it not touching our player, the ref gave a corner. I suspect he gave us the free-kick to rectify his mistake. Two wrongs do not make a right, granted, but it happened. Poor refereeing isn't something that is rare nowadays.
A draw would have been a fair result, but as it is, I am personally delighted to have come away with a 1-0 lead going into what will be a very tough second leg. This is by no means over, and I think you are probably considered the favourites.
What disappoints me though, is to read that some of your fans were pissing in people's gardens, and that some of them picked on an elderly gentleman with a heart condition and pushed him over a low wall. It saddens me to think that people are capable of such disrespect, no matter the club they support. I realise it was a minority of your support, so please don't think I am tarring you all with the same brush.
I look forward to the match in a fortnight's time, should be a cracking game and a great atmosphere!

I think this comment shows how good he really is and the potential he has, he was below far last night so just imagine how good he has been previously. A great young talent

Firstly our disallowed goal was very similar to your goal, and TBF it should of stood. Fair report otherwise. And i have not heard of any of what you said. If an elderly Gentleman had been pushed over i will tell you now he would of been dealt with by our own.
Wed Jan 11, 2012 4:27 pm
always interesting to hear the oppositions view on the game not bad in all fairness ,agree zaha is a good player, i dont think he caused cardiff major problems but i can see him leaving soon to a bigger club, cant recall hearing the palace fans sing that he was to good for us,personally i was disappointed in the place fans there was a section to the left of city fans behind one of the goals that made some noise but overall nothing major, didnt see no bother myself i was in the pub opposite the bookies but that was full of cardiff, not a bad trip apart from the rsult and the chippie outside theground running out of chips
Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:06 pm
Palace fan ; are you sure about the elderly gentleman ? It really sounds out of character. We are not like that.
Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:13 pm
Half decent report if a little biased towards you. No one even touched your keeper for Miller's goal. It was a perfectly good goal and you would be more than a little pissed off if you had one like that disallowed. I think we were the better team overall but needed to be a little sharper and slicker to break down your packed defence and turn our superiority into goals. I have a feeling we are not destined to get through this tie and if that is the case good luck to your boys in the final.
Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:18 pm
moonboots ; hope that I'm wrong, but tend to agree with your last sentence. Just hope that all this does not distract from the main business, the Championship. We need a good, solid finish to the season
Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:21 pm
Two things to respond to. Firstly, regarding the noise.
The fact that you are situated in the arthur wait stand, which has the best acoustics in the ground and you are far away from the main set of home fans is why you think the noise was quieter than it actually was. We have had this discussion on our own boards, where we all have differing opinions on the noise because of where we sit. The stand to your right as you face the pitch was the family stand which you sang "your support is f*cking shit" to. It was also the stand near where Anthony Gerrard attempted to knock down the Eagle which we have at the ground, at half time, by aiming a pot shot at her. That stand never sings (I should know, I sit there for a variety of reasons and am the only one who makes noise other than applause or talking around me), but it's cos it's full of families and little kids. The noise you made would have stopped you from hearing our fans because you can't hear others over your own voices that well.
Then the point regarding the elderly gentleman, this is taken from his post on our forum:
(A) "mob of about 20 piled through the Garage forecourt before the game.
One of this happy band decided to put his face within inches of mine while screaming and spitting 'BLUE ARMY' at the top of his voice - another booted my Thermos mug and then a couple of others shoved me backwards over the dwarf wall. As a 63 yr old with a heart condition I was clearly the only soft option available for these cowardly thugs. Fortunately a hedge broke my fall, and a terrific young (Under 16 I'd have thought) Palace fan helped me to my feet. Using the simple expedient of looking away, this at least saved the Police who were less than 20 yds away in their van, from having to break off their conversation and come out in the cold. Despite being a bit shaken up and having a few additional aches and pains this morning I have survived the experience, but will I be going to Cardiff? - not a chance. To the Palace lad who came to my help, whoever you are, my sincere thanks, you're more of a man than these scum will ever be."
I don't want this to turn into a thread discussing a small element of scum or slagging each others' noise or supporters off, because we're better than that.
Zaha wasn't at his best last night because your players teamed up on him in threes, and he didn't see the ball much. But when he runs with the ball at his feet his tricks are quality and not just the sort of fancy stepovers that get you nowehere. His end product is lacking, but when he finds that he will be in the top half of the premier league at least. Needs a few more years at Palace, and will get them unless we get a silly offer as he just signed a new 5 and a half year deal.
Kenny Miller needs to be marked tightly for the 2nd leg, can cause all sorts of problems if left alone, but our manager knows that as he commented in the Evening Standard last night before the game about Miller's threat.
Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:34 pm
Palace fan ; Who knows if it is true or not, but his main point seems to call us scum. Fair enough, he's entitled to his opinion. But I'll take his comments with a pinch of salt. Besides, not like the Met to be chatting in their nice, warm van when there are CCFC fans about!
Otherwise, good post

Time will tell who gets to Wembley. If you do, then best of luck. Hope that you would wish us well too.

From watching on TV I can say Palace were quite loud in their 'Ultras' end
our fans were class as usual
your not far wrong on your assessment of the game Palace Fan
Whitts was starved and we couldnt get going so to speak
I just wished that those balls that dropped to Joe Ralls would have dropped to Whitts
regarding the goal, it's happened, no point on dwelling on it
I must ask, are you happy with watching your team defend every game?
I know you are doing well in the league and not fighting at the wrong end of the table but do you get bored of negative tactics ie, waiting upon set-pieces and rare opportunities?
Last night proved possession means f**K all, the only stat that counts is goals scored
Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:48 pm
Palace Fan your thoughts on the noise we can see where you are coming from there. At the CCS we have that problem when one stand is singing you can't hear it on the other side, But we cant say anything on noise at home ours is worse than shit.
And with that old fella if that did happen then on behalf of City fans i say sorry, and i know if it had been seen by our proper Lads this City fan would of been sorted.
But now its game on for the second half. See you soon

I don't think an incident like that can be related to what sort of fans we are. It only takes one idiot as the Bristol City fan being assaulted unprovoked showed. However, the fact dozens of our fans then helped that Bristol City fan and caught the offender shows what the majority of our support is like.
However, due to the reputation our club has, stories will always poke their head out. Whether they are true or not is another story. It wouldn't surprise me in this day and age if the story is true though but it's not reflection on Cardiff fans in general. Just reflects badly on the c**t/s who carried this action out.
Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:58 pm
I wouldn't say our tactics are particularly negative, considering the dross we had under Peter Taylor.
Most of our fans are satisfied with the way we play, usually we get on the front foot a bit more but I think that was partly because you were full of attacking players that we stood back a little more. We could do with a left winger to give the attackers more service but overall we are building the club slowly. We are rebuilding in every way after administration. Under George Burley we would focus on attack and either lose 3-2 or lose 3-0! Our defence was shocking, and Dougie has tried to rectify that. I think next season, as we get different players in we will try to become more attacking.
Edit - to the poster above me, I have to agree entirely. I tried to emphasise that it was a minority and that you cannot generalise.

obviously I don't watch you everyweek, so was curious...
i suppose your building string foundations and all you need is a few more creative players and definitely a goalscorer

Alright mate.
When freedman took over a year ago we were getting tonked 3.4 or 5 nil seemingly every other week.He had to sort the defence out and he has done that.I think he will go on to be a very good manager but I agree he is very defensive.
Wed Jan 11, 2012 6:29 pm
credit where it's due, he's done well so far
young Scottish managers are all the rage
Wed Jan 11, 2012 7:01 pm
Good game and a good atmosphere, but what made my night last night was when we were drinking outside the witherspoon pub down by the station. When about a mob of 20 or 30 city youngsters came up singing the ultras song giving it the big one and as they got to the top of the steps a couple of older city standing outside the pub started singing millwall, and come on you taffy c*nts in a cockney accent.to see them stop in their tracks

the oldest there looked about 12.everyone started singing does your mother know your here.funny as f*ck.
Wed Jan 11, 2012 7:13 pm
if what you say is right about the elderly gentleman i am ashamed , like most clubs there are a few mindless idiots and we have to many of those, i wont say sorry on behalf of them because they do not belong to the club.
Wed Jan 11, 2012 9:01 pm
I'll take the 65 yr old getting bullied with a pinch of salt too.
Sounds to me as much a dig at the Met for whatever reason
as it does at Cardiff City 'fans'
Remember, it was a post on a forum by a faceless poster.
Had any of the real City lot been present at an incident like this, those
caught bullying would have been served well and truly by 'proper' Soul Crew
lads with membership cards and photo IDs the lot.

sorry to hear the news about the elderly supporter, Hopefully the 2nd leg both fans will mingle its generally pretty safe to visit Cardiff these days and wearing your colours is not a problem

re your disallowed goal as has been said it wasn't a corner in the first place
i have watched it back and one of your players puts his arm round the back of Speroni not normally given but due to the corner mistake i suspect the ref was looking very closely
i thought you were the better side but its all about goals of course and although you came close a couple of times Speroni hardly had a save to make
re our tactics i think we are too defensive every week especiallly at home which is why we have drawn so many often 0 0. if we played Scannell along side Murray we would be a lot more dangerous and get more goals
it will be more of the same in the next leg , our best hope is to get an away goal but i would say you are still favourites

Terible decision, but its done and dusted and the book says 1-0.
Too close to call, nothing between the sides.
You've got some very good players. I felt Gardner was awesome at the CCS, and even better last night.
Look forward to it -and the biggest away following at the CCS since it opened.

There was no foul on Speroni. There was about fifteen million people in the penalty Box. And the goal you scored well that was handball.

Nobody called for it, not even your fans. They looked as shocked as anyone.
All the pundits said 'no foul', and i had several texts from people watching on tv who said, no way should it have been disallowed.
At the end of the day the goal wasn't given, but it should have nothing to do, as suggested with whether it was a corner or not in the first place. sometimes you get them sometimes not, in fairness as a group we took it on the chin. Your goal had a hint of handball, but so did ours against Reading. Win some lose some.
I've seen goals when our keeper has been charged into the net -one by yourselves a few seasons ago and one by Swansea, one by Bristol City, one by Reading, stand out without much thouhgt. Some you win, some you lose.
Hopefully we'll get the luck in the 2nd leg.
