Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay says " new signings are needed for league and cup charge "

WalesOnlineJan 7 2012

Malky Mackay has underlined that his Cardiff City squad can’t hope to continue their drive for Carling Cup success plus promotion without new signings.

“We don’t have the squad for that, it’s as simple as that,” said manager Mackay, who sends his team out against five-times FA Cup winners West Brom at the Hawthorns today.

The Bluebirds are intent on bringing in at least two new players during the January transfer window and Mackay describes that quest as ‘ongoing’.

Mackay and his player recruitment team – headed up by Iain Moody – are remaining patient and closely monitoring movement into Premier League clubs which could mean somebody else is out of a 25-man squad and available.

The key positions for City are wide in midfield, where Mackay would like to have competition for Craig Conway and Don Cowie, plus up front.

Mackay has been given the go-ahead by Malaysian investors to move for new signings, but is prepared to wait until the last day of the transfer window.

Mackay is delighted with Cardiff’s progress so far – only four defeats in 30 matches – but is still planning for the future.

“We will be strengthening over the next three windows and beyond,” he said.

“We are working to bring players in, but they have to be the right players. We have to be patient.

“We don’t have the size of squad to challenge in every competition. It’s as simple as that. But we are in these competitions. We have chosen to be in them.

“It’s important to have good staff who make sure out players recover in time and our preparation is thorough and spot on.”

Yep I think most of the people on this board would agree with you there Annis.
Malky has said him self he has been lucky with his players that they haven't had a lot of big injury's to worry them, and that his medical staff has been working really hard to keep every oone fit.

Every workman needs tool to do there Job, with Football managers its his staff all working with the players, a bit of luck on there side, AND! The tool that he needs more anything is a Bank Balance to work with. Malky has brought out the best in the players we have, and even worked Miracles with some of them.

But in the end it still comes down to money , money to bring in new Players and Money to keep the good players we have.

I would say we have one of the best ever chances to get to the prem ,than we have ever had in a long time, with a Manager that I believe could keep us there ,should we get there. All Malky need to get us there is a few more Players and for the guys at the top to open the Bank up a little for him so he can get the tools to do his Job. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :old:

Carl says in his update there is money available, yes there is but in my opinion no where near what Malky knows he needs to get the squad how he would like it. Back in September he lost players due to there not being enough money available. I stand by what I have said before, Malky needs enough money for 3 or 4 more quality players. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

So the people who said the Club must live with-in its means and no more return to the old days of unaffordable wages and spending and want us to spend money the Club hasn't got ?. If already need to be bailed out to the tune of a million a month , its quite clear that even with less players and the so called high earners gone , that the Club is spending beyond it's means.

Peter Ridsdale would be proud

Our manager Malky needs money if he is to succeed. :ayatollah:

Let's look at one of our competitors.....West Ham

Allardyce said: "In an ideal world, I will bring in two new players this month - a forward and a defender - because we only have five subs and we have to rotate the squad. Two quality players would be great. Maybe we will go for a wide player as well."
He added: "We have already started the process of bidding but without any success at the moment, either permanent or loan deals. "
"The co-owners Mr Sullivan and Mr Gold have pressed the button on a lot of potential deals already."
"I can't be more pleased with the way they have supported me. More goals is what we are after but we haven't managed to clinch one yet."

Sound familiar? Would we say that Sullivan and Gold are not backing Sam?
Or is it just that good players at reasonable prices are few and far between in January?

So Malkys got the money there and he's just waiting for the right players to become available. If we don't sign anybody then it will only be because Malky didn't believe any players who were available, were right for the team. If thats the case then so be it, nice to see hes not prepared to waste money.

Yes I honestly dont think there will be, prob 2 at most, but if the 2 are quality and Malky says they are what he has wanted, then I will be happy as I trust his judgement. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Having stumped up millions (inc wages) for kevin nolan its fair to say they have backed big sam and its not a line from him to keeo the owners happy.

Wheres up until now i do think malky has had to play the media game in terns if what hes been given.

Can you please tell me in your opinion Stavross what defines right players for the team? because I'm thinking Bellamy who had something of a reputation for disruption in the dressing room, are you telling me that if by some miracle he became available Malky would not entertain the possibility of signing him,i await your response with great interest

Baring the addition of another pacey winger I would be quietly confident that we could maintain our promotion challenge. Look at the starting XI from yesterday, to say we lack depth is short of the mark, it was a strong team that I would expect to do reasonably well in the Championship.

GK - Marshall and Heaton - Not too many teams in this division can boast having two very good goalkeepers in their squad.

RB - McNaughton, Blake and Quinn - Again I would question who could rival us for depth in this position. McNaughton is the arguably the best defender in the Championship, while Blake and Quinn have proven themselves to be more than able cover.

LB - Taylor and Naylor - Taylor has been a great signing so far for us and has solved our previous left-back problem, Naylor meanwhile although he lacks the desired pace, is still an experienced player at the level and has when called upon under Mackay performed very well.

CB - Turner, Hudson, Gerrard, Keinan and Gyepes - In terms of numbers again it is fair to say we are blessed in this area also - although all 5 aren't the quickest,

RM - Cowie - URGENT ADDITION PLEASE!!! Cowie has been excellent for us for far, a machine! However, we cannot expect Cowie to continue to maintain both his fitness and form. Also I believe we lack pace both on the left and right which has been essential to the success of promoted clubs in the past, we have been linked with both Noone and Kebe this window and either one of them would be a fantastic addition to the club, would love us to sign both but I suspect that is being way too optimistic.

LM - Conway and Ralls - Like the right-side of midfield this is the area in my opinion we need to add to urgently, Ralls has come in and been great so far for such a young man, while Conway despite a number of critics deserves praise for his efforts, if we are able to add a natural left-winger to the squad I feel we would see the best of Conway playing of his natural right-side instead of constantly having to cut inside which at times is predictable.

CM - Whittingham, Gunnarsson, Kiss and McPhail - What can I say about Whittingham that hasn't already been said before 'Peter Whittingham! He does what he wants!', class act, first name on the team sheet right now and it cannot be underestimated how important it is to keep hold of him. IMO Gunnarsson has been our player of the season thus far, although technically Whittingham is the superior of the two, I would argue that Gunnarsson is our most complete midfielder, whether it be sitting ahead of the back-4, supporting Miller up front or assisting with a long throw, Gunnarsson has been immense! Kiss has adapted really well to Championship football thus far, however given how often he lunges into challenges I would be amazed if he doesn't see red by the end of the season. McPhail is a class act as far as I'm concerned, and I'm sure had it not been for a number of injuries he would have established himself in the team by now. However given that Kiss and McPhail have been unlucky at times this season with injuries I would perhaps be tempted to bring a player in on loan to provide some additional cover.

Oh shit I almost forgot Taiwo

ST - Miller, Gestede, Earnshaw and Mason - There has been plenty of speculation linking us with a move for another forward - particularly with Diouf - however with us playing only one striker at the moment I don't see the great urgency to add to this position, Miller has been fantastic so far and long may his form continue, Mason and Gestede have proven very astute additions by Mackay, while as proven yesterday Earnshaw demonstrated that he still has a great deal to offer, contrary to the views of many. Perhaps a natural target man would come in handy, especially given that Gestede seems to pick up a number of niggling injuries, but I would caution the logic of adding to the area given we only tend to play one striker at any given time.

My post is a bit longer than I initially anticipated but to cut a long story short IMO we only need a winger, perhaps two if the right player is available at the right price. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Coming from the one that wanted to much for our Club to live with-in its means and an end of borrowing, wages we can't afford to to chase a dream Like I said, be careful what you wish for, because sometimes it comes true

It's an dangerous game to play , but its clear that we do need to splash the cash we haven't got in order to give the Team the best chance
