i can assure you if a player leaves on a free then there is no deal between to two sides, no contracts, agreements or sell on fees.
i thought it was common knowledge to be honest

Not quite right Jezzy,
Matthews left at the end of his contract, not on a free. There's a difference. A free transfer can mean a player leaves while still under contract for no fee but with whatever add-ons/sell-ons the clubs negotiate. A player at the end of his contract, like Matthews, can sign for any other club and any signing-on fee goes to him/his agent. There is however the issue of compensation for players under the age of 24 at the end of their contracts. This is minimal and was probably agreed between the clubs and wouldnt involve a sell-on fee....
