Peter Whittingham - Club Legend?

Wed Jan 04, 2012 10:04 am

I have always been a fan of Whittingham. Even when he was going through a bad spell I felt he still had the overall talent. However, it seems he still divides opinion in some quarters.

I was just keen to see how many of you see Whittingham as a club legend or think he will be when his playing days here finally come to an end?

If you look at the facts his assists and goals figures have him up near the top of our all time list. He is often the most entertaining player in our squad to watch and has been for a number of seasons now. He has now added the physical element to his game and improved his defensive abilities.

Also, we mustn't forget, when the club reached lows last season with rumours of players misbehaving and dressing room discontent, Whittingham was the consummate professional and kept his head down.

I hope Whittingham is seen as one of the best this club has seen because, personally, I think he is. He deserves all the credit he gets not only for evolving his game as seasons pass but also for the way he conducts himself off the pitch. He has also chosen to stay with us when there were times when he undoubtedly had the chance to leave.

Here's to you Peter Whittingham! You can do what you want! :ayatollah: :D

legend is far too strong for somebody who has been at a club only 5 years.

but does he have the making to become one? yes, especially if we make it to the prem

Is 5 years too short though? Surely, it isn't necessarily how long you are at the club but how you play when you are there? :D

yes he has played very very well, but if he leaves this season, can u honestly say people will remember him in 10 years as a legend? i highly doubt it, remember him as a great player but legend no, not yet.

plus as you say he is nearing the top of our all time charts yes, but until he has acheieved something like this, or somethign else major, like promotion, then i dont think legend is going to happen yet

he's played in an FA cup final, a play-off final, shown great loyalty and is in the form of his life to the point where he is considered almost irreplaceable in what many consider to be our finest team for decades.....none of our 'legends' of the 80's and 90's can say that they matched his playing achievments for us....legend for me...length of service is irrelevant!

McNaughton, yes.....McPhail's performances haven't been consistent enough over the years. Whittingham has been virtually an ever-present in all that we have been through over the last 5 years. We are also now on the verge of a Carling Cup final and strong contenders for automatic promotion. For me....he's a legend. For you, maybe not. To some people, Leo Fortune-West is a legend......

Jezzy i totally disagree with you. I can think of many players over the year who played less than 5 years for us who i consider to be Cardiff City legends.
Graham Kavanagh only played for us for 4 years and the one and only Phil Stant was even less than that i consider him Cardiff City's greatest ever player (even though in truth he was far from it :D)

I'll be honest i've always found whitts frustrating. Even when he scored 22 league goals a couple of years ago i still thought he under-acheived :? But this year i believe he has finally fulfilled his potential. I believe Dave Jones deserves part of the credit in seeing that he was of more use in the middle than on the wing but i believe the majority of the credit lies with Malky who has brought out parts of Whitts game that i didn't believe he was capable of.
He has always had an abundance of talent but now he is a 90 minute player instead of a 20 minute player and i think he is irreplacable for us :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I,d say yes deffo, some on here were calling bellers a city legend half way through the season, so 5yrs effort and a another contract together with his current form puts him right up there imo. :ayatollah:

Candy? Candy!? You mean sweets, Mr Yankee Doodle!

I guess legend status is individual to the person it seems. I don't consider Kavanagh to be a legend but many do.

Being honest I thought Whittingham should have been shown the door at the end of the season when we missed the play-offs by one goal due in part to the 6-1 defeat at Preston.

I was astonished when he started for us the following season but in fairness he has proved me wrong and is now one of my firm favourites.

Whitts doesn't fall into 'Legend' status because of his indifferent first few season, but he surely has the most talented player ever to pull on a blue shirt (in my lifetime) status without a doubt.

Re: Peter Whittingham - Club Legend?

When you look back at his career with us the first year wasn't great. But I really noticed his talent in the 07/08 season, in particular the Boro FA Cup Q/F match. But he continued to grow after that and netted 22 goals in one season in 09/10. Last year he was great but not amazing, he was overshadowed by Bellers, Jay, Chops and Burkey IMO. But this year he has really shone, adding a defensive side to his game and scoring goals.
If he continues to shine and we get promoted this year then we can call him a legend. If he scores the winner in the Carling Cup final he can be called a legend. If none of these things happen and he's still playing well for us over the next 2 seasons, I still think we can call him a legend :ayatollah:
