but wasnt Palestine under British control when Israel declared themselves an independent state and we retreated and it was the UN that recognised the rights of the Jewish state and split the country accordingly

Are you talking about just after the 2nd WW? Isn't that when the British soldiers saved them from German camps and returned them to Isreal. That "retreat" as you called it was more about getting the feck out of there because the same Jews that were saved from certain death, turned their guns on the same British soldiers who saved them from the Nazis. Those Bitish soldiers turned in to a peace keeping force trying to stop the Jews from killing the people who lived there already. Everything else stems from that doesn't it?

well thats not strictly true either because Jews have been living in that area since time began hanukkah is the celebration of the Maccabian Revolution which saw the Jews reclaim Jerusalem from the Egyptians in 2nd century BC

It depends on how far back in history you are willing to look. Palestine, around 1800 B.C was actually the Jewish homeland and was only invaded by arabs around the 7th century, more intelligent people than us on here have tried and failed to sort this one out! Just as Israel shouldn't be reclaiming land from 1000's of years ago, Palestine and Hezzbollah should not be launching rockets and such like into Israel.....if ever you could bang 2 heads together!!
