The reason I ask these questions is because I work in jobs which I would never thought I'd ever see myself in a couple of years back but it keeps the bills getting paid. I was just wondering does everyone think that way or does the homeowners just think along those lines..?

I look everyday for work and I'm now looking for work in the Capital (applied for one). As I don't have any bills to pay (yet), I still have a bit more time so I'm also looking for voluntary work. This would look great on your CV and shows employers you're willing to work.

I'm now getting to the point that I'll work in a bloody telecoms company and sit in an cubicle phoning random people, selling crap and getting abused back.

I understand where you're coming from but for me, I'm kinda fortunate where I don't have bills to pay so I've got a bit more time but I really want to get a job for proper income. I'm currently on Job Seekers Allowance and hate it.

Thats really my point to be honest. Maybe because I have bills to pay I would have applied for contact centre work from the very beginning with any other positions which maybe available.

I'm not having a go so please dont take it like that. I just feel that because of different circumstances then it does reflect on the way a person goes about finding work.

I understand where you're coming from and for once I'm not going to heckle you or say "those bloody Tories" :D

I will say I like what the Tories have done with helping people (unless this was already under Labour), my careers advisory has told me that once you are on the Allowance for 13 weeks (yes I've been unemployed for a while), that they can chuck you on a work placement with an employer to gain experience.

I will take that up as alot of employers ask for experienced people only...how are people my age (18) supposed to get exerience if employers will only hire experienced people? So I "praise", if you like, the Tories on that.

Unfortunately I don't. :(

Plenty of jobs out there.

My mates son is 17 just left sixth form, no job experience.

Just started with Barclays, £6 an hour in Pentwyn.

You can get a job in the Meat Factory in Merthyr, same rate, contact Merthyr Job Centre 0845 6043719

We just took on 3 cleaners in my place, offering them 27 hours a week at £6.30 an hour.

We got 2 African Chaps and a fella from Aberdare. 13 applicants, 8 Eastern Europeans, 2 African Chaps and 3 locals.

I cannot get my head around this.

The last couple of years I've done work I thought I would not have to do. Now I am back on track with work that I am good at doing. Before doing this job now I just hated the way the country had gone. I just could not believe how many foreigners were doing work in jobs that I considered OK. Why was not a Brit doing this work, was it because they did not want to or there was not enough qualified to do it. Well I came ot the ocnclusion there wer eenough Brits but foreign labour was cheap and were allowed to work here. I'll get straight to the point the guys running the show over here have turned their backs on the British worker and for the sake of profit turned to cheap labour.

I have been working on the railway for ten years, all agency work. I am in and out of work all the time, fortunately in more than out. Sometimes I have been with a certain agency for a few years at a time, but I am registered to work with a few different ones at the moment, swapping and changing where the work is. You also have to take the rough with the smooth, long hours, a lot of travelling, staying away from home. Can be very good money if you can progress through different competencies but can also work out as not so good. For example £10 an hour 8 hr shift = £80, take away fuel and bridge money and tax can leave you left with 40 odd quid, and being out of the house for 16hrs, or other times taking home over a grand a week. Can be very hard work sometimes and can be easy sometimes too.
Work is patchy at the moment though.

its a mixture of eastern europeans are cheaper to employ and there are very few if any qualified brits and brits dont want to do this type of work (manual labour jobs)
since our education system concentrated solely on academic skills and threw out practical skills
this country has created an entire generation that thinks physical labour jobs including highly skilled jobs are demeaning and shows a failure in life.

I am the same, as I said, I did a job at £6 an hour, prior to this I was on £29 an hour. I took the job as a better option than JSA.

We put the jobs out there, nothing to do with cheap labour, 13 people applied, 8 eastern europeans, none of them got them job.

2 Nigerian lads turned up smartly dressed with a great attitued to the job. They were both taken on. So did the bloke from Aberdare, he is no spring chicken, we have agreed a flexible working plan for him as he is caring for his wife.

The other two 'Brits' that turned up should have been seen to be believed. Both women, both thought they had a god given right to the job, neither turned up to interview smartly dressed, and believe it or not, one was even asked to put out her fag in reception.

Just to add.

There was nothing stopping anyone applying for these cleaning jobs, they were registered with the Job Centre, and were
placed with Red and Acorn recruitment agenices.

Fact is, no one applied.

With WTC that was £700 month for someone out of work for 3 hours cleaning in the morning and 3 at night.

Nobody wanted to do it because everyone thinks they are above it.

Its just my opinion and based on what I have seen with my own eyes, its a fact.

I can completely relate to this mate and it makes me wonder if there is actually an unemployment problem in the country, as some of the people applying for jobs where I work, are a joke!

I completely sympathise with Bridgend Bluebird, because I was in his shoes 10 years ago and it's very hard to get a half decent first job without any experience, I found that even when showing a good attitude, companies just didn't want to take the risk.

However, where I work, we take on a lot of temps and many of them are a complete waste of space and just try to take the piss.

It's made obvious to them from the offset, that if they knuckle down and work hard - they could probably get full time work with us earning more than 30% more than what the agency pays them - but a large % of them are a complete waste of Oxygen.

Thankfully, I haven't been unemployed for 8 years though, so maybe I'm speaking out of line here...

no it is true my mate studied 3 years for a degree in hospitality and leisure management
he hasnt found a job yet
but thats not because he cant find one
he doesnt want to work weekends
and every job hes been offered requires that he works some weekends
i scream at him everytime he turns down a job
this industry requires you to work on the weekends
if you didnt want to work weekends why study for that job
another problem in this country is people want to fit their career around their social lives instead of fitiing their social lives around their career

My little sister of 17 emailed me her CV (9 year difference) , I made a few changes and sent it back. See applied for jobs she WANTED to do and had a handful of interviews within a fortnight...yes, she now has a very well paid part time job that will see her through 6th form and uni.

There are jobs out there, buts that easier said than done...I would literally take anything you can for now. I am a job snob aswell, but its a lot easier looking for a job you want whilst you have £'s coming in that stop you from living a non existent life of depression.

Your spot on mate, my whole life I have worked whatever I can and fitted everything in around that. Last year when I got a new job, was the first time in my adult life that I had weekends off and finished work before 6pm everyday - but it took me 9 years working my way up through the same company to get to that stage.

Years ago, I used to work 7am - 1pm on a Saturday then go back and work 6pm - 9pm - all so that I could watch City every week.

If people are broke, they should take that they can get, with great sacrifice comes great reward!

I 100% agree with you. As I've said, I'm currently unemployed and I'm now looking for anything! But obviously I want to leave weekends free for my beloved Cardiff City and for the TA's. But if I have to work weekends then fine I will.

Tony blair made sitting on your arse a
better alternative than getting paid a low wage.
