work advice

Fri Dec 16, 2011 5:47 pm

just looking for a bit of advice, i work in a hotel, since sept weve had a new manager, now when he 1st started he stated we would be open xmas, because we havnt done for the past 4 yrs, ive never had a prob with it, and was quite happy to work ( im a chef ), so i arranged my family xmas and spending time with my family to suit work, now 3 weeks ago, he approached me, and quite clearly stated that we would now be closing the hotel, and i could disapear for a few days, i asked if this was final and could i re arrange my xmas, he said no prob, so happy as larry, i arranged to go up to wales to see my family on xmas eve, and return back to work as agreeded on 27th, now...... come weds this week, i have now been told that we are back open as normall, and they would require me to work, to which ive refused so far, but hes been told by head office to do so, there is only me in the kitchen, so it falls on me, so im just wondering, do i have any rights to refuse to work and go to wales like planned???

cheers for any advice

I would use it to your advantage.

I would say something like. "Well... I have made arrangements and its not going to go down well with the family. However, as you asked specifically, I will help out - needs must and all that - but could you help me if I need the favour returned some time?"

In these times of people being laid of your manager will probably see you as someone he can rely on!

nothing is in my contract, its just a normall 48 hr week one, but as i said, for the past 3 yrs prior, we have been shut, due to the fact wev done so well in the year, we havnt needed to open, and to be honest, this year hasnt been that bad either, its just things change when i new manager takes over, at the start of the year we were going to be shut this year, new bloke comes in, start of sept, and changes it, then, end of nov, shuts its, then changes mind again and opens, since hes been here, hes pissed alot of people off, but thats his job i guess, we get on fine and have a good relationship, and only last night i found out from weds nxt week, he wont even be here until 3rd jan, hes buggering off himself......

think a chat on monday will solve it
