Interesting article.

Man utd clearly have struggled linking from back to front at any pace this year, and Whitts is certainly doing a splendid job as we know.
I may be wrong here but Im not sure how modern an idea this is. Glenn Hoddle (latter years) and Jan Molby both spring to my mind from the 80s?
Also did Beckenbauer play in this role before moving to a more traditional sweeper role?

It's certainly not a new role, and you're right in saying it began in and around the 80s. In the few years though this position has really grown, it's now one of - if not the - most important position on the field. Just look at our own Whitts, who dictates play.
