" Malkay Enforces Strict Drinking Policy "

CARDIFF CITY manager Malky Mackay has told his team to banish memories of the club’s dreadful defeat to Middlesbrough last May, when their promotion rivals visit again on Saturday.

The Bluebirds welcome the Teesside outfit for the first time since a shock 3-0 reverse at the tail end of last season killed off their hopes of going up automatically.

After that game, there were allegations that some Cardiff players had been drinking in the run-up to the game.

Only yesterday, in a radio interview, Jones said certain players let himself, their team-mates and the club down in the build up to that crunch May Day clash

But Mackay revealed he has slapped a 72-hour drink ban on his players, insisting he doesn’t want alcohol touched on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday before a Saturday match

Mackay denied he was a disciplinarian, but said: “I suppose everyone here has probably still got a bad taste in their mouth about the last meeting.

“People had expectations about that day, about what the day was going to bring and then there was the way it turned out.

“A lot of our supporters are probably looking at the game, saying, ‘Oh no, do you remember the last one?’

“But as much as I respect and understand the depth of the pain here, for me, it’s all about this game on Saturday, against a good team in the division and most of my team will be different too.”

Since arriving in the summer Mackay has set about reorganising the club from top to bottom with startling results as the Bluebirds currently lie third with Boro equal on points and just one place behind.

But the no-nonsense Scot insisted he was no dictator when it came to laying down the law to his players.

“I don’t see myself as strict. I like to think if any one of the players knocked on my door and asked if they could do something because of some reason then I’m open to that,” said Mackay.

“The rules set in place at the start of the season saw the players go into a room for half an hour then bring the rules to me when they were ready.

“I tweaked them, gave it back to them and it’s they who run their own fine system.

“I’m not dictating to anyone. but I do expect certain standards.

“For me if you’ve got the Cardiff City badge on you respect others or you won’t be here very long.

“That’s not dictating to people, that’s just saying if you work for Cardiff City this is the level you have to be at.”

Mackay said he is realistic enough to know his players will want to drink alcohol and that he has no problem with it as long as things are done in moderation.

His belief is that no player should touch alcohol for three days ahead of a clash.

“Ideally players would not drink alcohol at all,” added Mackay.

“But I’m realistic enough to know that if you have a game on the Saturday and not one until the next Saturday and you want to go out on the Saturday night then I’m absolutely cool with it.

“But there’s a point in the week where you should not drink from then on.

“I think Wednesday, Thursday and Friday would not be advisable as a professional athlete. I don’t need spies out there because it will show in your performance in the end.

“But I’m very comfortable with having my guys relaxing and having time to come down.”

All the necessary attributes to be a quality manager and a decent human being

What a breath of fresh air malkay is, it,s a shame he wasn,t here last season to keep the wasters we had in check, then again if malkay had been here he wouldn,t have signed half of the chokers we had on the books, their work rate wouldn,t have been up to his expectation!!!!

Malky is almost too good. He is going to build a extremely good reputation for himself, and fast. It sounds far fetched but when Sir Alex pops his clogs or retires, I believe United wont go for a big name, been there, done it manager. I believe they would look for an up and coming manager with all the attributes MM has, I can see similarities in both managers, excluding the accent of course. They will look for another minimum 2 decade manager.

A very astute man and even talking about not drinking before a game from the weds onwards shows how serious he is taking things and the players are respecting that!!

Most of us don't mind losing, as long as it is to a good side (like Boro last season), and that our team and management have done everything possible to win (not like us last season). That's football.

Makes me ill to think about some of the mercenaries that were here at the time of the last Boro game.

What I liked most about this interview is how clearly Malkay Mackay understands failures like last season from a fans perspective and when he says things like;

That really hit home to me because although I didn't expect to walk allover Middlesbrough I didn't expect us to lose by a record margin against them in Cardiff. Thats what the 3-0 defeat was last season the biggest winning margin for Middlesbrough in the history of games between us in Cardiff. But that was life as a Bluebirds fan over the last few years choking at the big moments at the end of the season.

The other thing which impressed me is when Malkay says;

When he says that I believe him and it represents such a change it's just fantastic.

Yes the Boro game still hurts from last season, but the Sheffield Wednesday away game stays in my mind, only needed a point
