Since Iv'e been living in and around Liverpool, ive got to know the people very well. I work with 100's of them, of all demographics on a weekly basis and iv'e a great group of mates and relatives through my other half too. Ive got to know an incredible amount about the mentality of 'a scouser', I know I sound like David Attenborough but its bizarre!
They have a strong sense of identity, but its NOT English...ive had so many conversation in pubs, clubs and work with all types of men and women and when I comment on England and Wales in a 'you & us' kind of way I always get stopped in my tracks with "we aint English, where Scouse lad". I was in the pub just off Liverpool central for the Spain game, when England scored there was a brief break in conversation then back to what they were doing, im not kidding...the only one who cheered was a southerner who felt like a right tw*t when he screamed.
They really do have an immense pride in their region, city, accent and culture. Liverpool/Everton are their national teams as well as their clubs, it represent everything that they are. I love it personally as I can identify with scousers very well being a Cardiff boy, cities are very similar in terms of industrial past and the working class humour that comes with it.
Just thought id share.
