The investigation into the press ongoing at moment

Mon Nov 28, 2011 8:14 pm

Really does show them bastards up in a bad light. Hounding people and making up bollocks half the time. Even when they are telling the truth what right do they have to pry into people's private lives.

If any of these scum papers contributed to the decision of Gary Speed to take his life in desperation then there should be hell to pay.

I am not buying any of them anymore. All newspapers should be boycotted.

Would you say that about the papers which exposed the MP expenses scandal?

I'm not saying it is right for a press pack to chase Sienna Miller down a dark lane, but we need a free press (and investigate journalism) of public figures.

There's a huge difference between exposing wrongdoing eg the expenses furore and prying into people's private lives and ruining lives.

This investigation is way overdue. These papers have been intruding into peoples lives and printing what they've wanted for far too long regardless of the truth or the distress they may cause.

I used to buy the sun on a monday for the city write up but have not bought a copy since the hatchett job they did on Mikey Dye and i won't buy a copy again.

Don't forget it's not just the red tops here, papers like the daily mail are just as bad.

Actually I would tend to agree with you.

However, if there was a privacy law you can bet your arse that the MP expenses scandal would never have seen the light of day. So while I hate hearing the stories before the Levison enquiry (more so the McCann's and the Dowlers than the film & TV stars) I'm also worried that there could be such a dumbing down of the press that the excesses of some public figures could well benefit.

completely agree, responsible investigative journalism is fine. Phone tapping parents of troops killed abroad isn't

It's a fine line Tony but it's one that needs to be skirted successfully. I think stuff like the expenses scandal would always come out. At least I hope so anway.

The speaker of the house at the time Michael Martin (the Celtic fan) tried to bury the whole thing by making MP's expenses an omission from the freedom of information act.

That's why I am very weary of giving more tools to the rich and famous to hide their indiscretions. So IMO the public interest defence has to stay but be better policed. PCC should be given proper teeth and be willing to use them.

Tony , you have thought this through deeper than most. You make good points. In fact I can't argue with your facts.
Privacy is a law that needs to be addressed.
Do MPs expenses compare to personal tragedy ? I'm sure you think personal tragedy is far greater but as a reader of this board I'm impressed with your "look at the bigger picture" train-of-thought.
Your outlook and questioning is refreshing. The only way I can criticise you is your timing this time. A bit too quick at a sensitive time for me.

But , keep that alternate questioning going Tony
