How about setting up a Gary Speed foundation?

Sun Nov 27, 2011 5:12 pm

All Welsh fans and anyone who has had the pleasure to be associated with the great Gary Speed will be devastated by his sudden passing. Gary Speed was a true footballing great who put a huge amount into the game from grassroots level right through to the very top.

A few months ago CCFC and Jacks united in grief over the tragic death of Mikey Dye. How about the same fans along with Newport, Wrexham and League of Wales clubs get together and do something to turn the grief into a positive action.A welsh fans tournament in the summer would a fantastic event which could go towards raising money for grassroots football across Wales in the name of the Gary Speed Foundation.

Gareth, you make a very good point.

Speedy was always known as someone who was great helping out the younger players as we have seen with the current Welsh team. It would be a great gesture if the FAW got behind setting up some sort of football school as you have suggested.

Gary was a proper Welsh legend and will be sadly missed by so many people.

RIP Gary

Gareth a great idea and hopefully the Welsh FA and others decide to do something like this or even back it. :ayatollah:

Gary Speed must be remembered by our kids and grandkids as he was a true hero. Lets hope the FAW do something for him.

I was thinking the same earlier Gareth.

The FAW of Wales should dedicate the 2014 qualification campaign to Gary Speed, take a couple of pounds on each ticket sale to fund your suggestion. That way the supporters get to show their appreciation and hopefully turn up in their droves which not only provides funding but should get a good atmopshere going which in turn helps the players.

Mr. Speed had started to give us Wales supporters some hope for the future, don't let his legacy die with him. What more of a fitting tribute than for Wales to qualify for the 2014 World Cup finals, be sixty years since the last time.

Surely waiting until the reasons he felt he needed to hang himself are known before organizing anything....just my opinion.

Don't pass comment on things you know nothing about. 12 years ago i came close to suicide thanks to work based problems. I had a wife and 2 kids. There were many times that i wanted to end it all but was too scared. I was popping anti-depressants like my kids eat smarties. Every now and then i get short periods where my depression comes back. I hate myself for having negative thoughts and try to hide things from my mrs and kids.

Please don't call Gary Speed a coward--you obviously know nothing about depression.

It takes a very brave person to take that way out. Something drove him to that, what, who knows.

You are either very young or very stupid, read some of the posts here and digest. Perhaps he took "that way out" to save others? Whatever comes out, and it will, will not take away my respect for the man. A true professional on and off the field.

ive seen my fair share of shit in this life
and ive come very close to going 'f**k it whats the point'
but you get on with life and find the joy in life
even if that joy seems impossible

Jonny, While I have some sympathy with what you are saying regarding the selfish nature of suicide, is this really an appropriate time to be saying this? You may have noticed the outpouring of emotion and the grief shown by everyone in the football world today. How about showing Speed the respect he deserves for being a top class premier and Wales international player and manager?

no maybe your'e right but if you have noticed i havent posted in the RIP Gary Speed thread though my thoughts do go to his family at this difficult time
but i dont believe a foundation should be set up in his name as he did commit suicide
there are people in this world who deserve foundations named after them
not this man

As someone who has suffered depression i can see both sides of the argument but as beds said now isnt the time or place.

we could just give all money to a charity that already represents people with depression

Doesnt look like speed had depression if the reports are true which out of respect we cannot mention. So sad he couldnt deal with the problem in another way. especially for his wife and kids.
