I'd just take it to an unlocking place like the market in Cardiff or something, shouldn't damage the phone.

If you own the phone just call your current provider. They have to give you the unlock code if you ask for it. And to be fair they don't really mind, in fact most will not only give you the code but give help on how to do it. Search their website.

As Berwyn said, as long as you obtained the phone legitimately the person who bought the phone originally can get a unlock code from their service provider, takes 3 days max
