And here's the story
CARDIFF City boss Malky Mackay insists he will have money to strengthen his squad come January, but those awaiting a ‘big name’ capture might well be left disappointed.
The new Bluebirds’ boss has already embarked on a mammoth rebuilding job at the Welsh capital club since arriving back in June.
With 12 players out of the door, 10 fresh faces were drafted in and under the Scot’s leadership, settled in quickly to give Cardiff an excellent start to the Championship campaign.
But as the likes of Craig Bellamy, Jay Bothroyd and Michael Chopra exited they were replaced by a group of players that might have left some of the Bluebirds’ faithful scratching their heads.
Robert Earnshaw, Kenny Miller and the likes of Don Cowie and Aron Gunnarsson might have needed no introduction, but Filip Kiss, Joe Mason, and Rudy Gestede were hardly at the top of your average supporter’s wish list – or even on the list at all.
But what Mackay has managed to do, unlike his predecessor Dave Jones, is to craft a Cardiff side greater than its individual parts. A team willing to fight for each other and work itself into the ground for the Bluebirds’ cause.
But still in some quarters the accusation is levelled that the current Bluebirds’ line-up lacks the degree of quality needed for a promotion push.
Mackay naturally bristles at the suggestion.
“I do hear people saying we lack quality, but obviously I don’t agree with it,” said Mackay.
“I know people are talking about the likes of Craig Bellamy, Michael Chopra and Jay Bothroyd, perhaps you would include Chris Burke in there too.
“That’s what they are comparing to.
“Maybe they do not recognise the new names, at least they are not instantly recognisable to them. But I have belief in my recruitment system.
“People can get caught up with names. You have to be careful about players like that especially who you buy and at what point in their careers you buy them
“But, if this was the case then where are our goals coming from?
“We are still scoring the goals and are the third highest scorers in the division.”
Indeed the Bluebirds are behind only current table-toppers Southampton and Peterborough, with their 29 league goals so far coming from 13 different players as if to illustrate that collective spirit.
At previous club Watford Mackay was renowned for blooding youngsters and producing the best from the frankly ordinary.
But he insists that was out of financial necessity and he holds no policy of avoiding ‘big name’ stars.
He points to the strenuous efforts he and the Bluebirds’ board made to attract Bellamy back to his hometown club in the summer as evidence of this.
Mackay added: “I’ve worked with and played alongside what could be called ‘big name’ players if you like. Of course I wanted Craig here, who wouldn’t? The guy’s a brilliant professional.
“I’m proud of the efforts this club made to bring him here, particularly the work of our chairman, but who can match what Liverpool have to offer?”
Bellamy and such talk is, of course, history now and Mackay is a man with his eyes firmly fixed on the future, particularly ensuring the Bluebirds remain in the promotion hunt with nearly two thirds of a gruelling campaign still to go.
One huge part of that process will occur when the transfer window reopens in the new year.
So far Mackay has hardly broken the bank when it has come to signings although his prudence has paid dividends.
A reported £875,000 to Turkish outfit Bursaspor for Kenny Miller already looks money well spent with the Scottish international the Bluebirds’ leading scorer with five league goals.
While the £750,000 in compensation to Coventry for 23-year-old centre-half Ben Turner seems a wise investment and the £250,000 to Plymouth for young marksman Joe Mason a positive steal.
Mackay held talks with the club’s billionaire backer, Malaysian businessman Vincent Tan, after the Bluebirds’ last outing, an excellent 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace.
The Cardiff boss does expects to have money to spend come January, but insists he will not be going cash crazy.
“I would want to spend money. But you have to get things in perspective,” said Mackay.
“I’d love to say, I want him, him and him.
“I’d love that kind of spending power.
“That’s not to say the club here have not given me a budget to work with.
“I’ve spoken to Vincent Tan and the chairman and they want to keep the club moving forward and they want a plan from me showing how I’m going to do that.
“They want us to build. I know on January 1st, whatever potential signings I have they will look at them.
“But things have to be relative to where we are.
“I have to go to the board and be realistic.
“There’s a line that has to be drawn and I’m fully aware of where that line is.”
With his squad still on the thin side, as a recent injury crisis acutely highlighted, many have been surprised Mackay has not been more active in the emergency loan window which closes on November 24.
Mackay insists it has not been for lack of effort and revealed he has one player he is keen to bring in, but a deal so far has eluded him.
Indeed unless that player, who naturally he will not name, does arrive he will not be looking to bring in anyone else.
“There’s one deal I have been trying to do, but there have been a number of objects in the way and that has been frustrating,” said Mackay.
“Apart from that there’s not been one, who I could have pushed the button on and said with conviction that he was going to improve my starting line-up.
“Look back at the deals over the last six weeks and very few people could say to me, ‘why didn’t you go and get him?
“Why didn’t Cardiff go and get that player.’
“I had a list of players I wanted to bring in this summer and we got 99 per cent of them. But really that brought it up to a bearable level.
“A manager is always going to say he needs more players and there are people still to leave the club, the lads who can’t get football here.
“But as for coming in, unless the one player I want drops, I will not bring anyone else in.”
Following the international break, Mackay and his side head back into Championship action with a trip to Reading on Saturday.
Never a man to leave anything to chance, Mackay is now thoroughly prepared for Cardiff’s next ‘block’ of games which ironically enough ends with the visit of Reading for the reverse fixture on January 2.
Mackay’s aim right now is simple, to still be in Premier League promotion contention when the FA Cup third round arrives early in early January.
“We’ve broken the season down into blocks.
“This is our time to refresh ourselves and consider the run up to the new year,” added Mackay.
“It’s another tough run and we know it’s going to be a period of very intense football for everybody. It’s another run of games that are massive for us.
“I look at the FA Cup third round in early January and think, if we are still in touching distance at the top of the table, we will reassess again and take another run at it.”

Take Swansea as an example ....... Scott Sinclair was never a big name signing yet he is now 1 of the best players there , Im sure Malky has similar players in mind ?

Malky so far has performed miracles
I personally dont care if Malky does not sign big names, they dont guarantee you anything, as long as he is able to get some players in.
Malky says.
“I would want to spend money. But you have to get things in perspective,” said Mackay.
“I’d love to say, I want him, him and him.
“I’d love that kind of spending power.

i'd rather one player fighting for the team than ten big names that don't fit the ethos of the team.

We stilll need cover though , we are short at front ifMiller got injured ..............also we are not using our whole squad anyway.
MM is using the "Compnay Line " but we do need one or two quality plaeyers as we will fade in the long season

I think a lot depends on moving out the players who are not in MM plans but that appears to be quite an issue. If you take Jon Parkin as an example he clearly doesn't figure in MM plans as he tried to ship him out as part of the Ben Turner deal with Coventry. Unfortunately that didn't happen because JP couldn't agree personal terms as Coventry were unwilling to offer him more than 60% of what we are paying him.
Does this mean other players like Gypes are not moving because other clubs are not prepared to match what Cardiff are paying them. Does this mean MM is operating with one hand tied behind his back because of the deals concluded by the previous manager. Certainly the fact we are still paying the last manager must be having an effect on MM current budget.
Because of this it may well be that MM will have another busy summer next year after the next tranch of DJ signings have their contracts expire.
Despite that I think that MM is so tuned in to the availability of players he will make a few moves during the January window as he continues his rebuilding process at the club.

I think this post makes it obvious to everyone that Malky is limited with options and finances, and also highlights what a fantastic job he's done so far taking that into consideration....

To be fair,I really like the way our team is being built this year. Unlike other years we seem to have assembled a very solid foundation first, which when added to could be something very special.
I also get the impression that Malky really does his homework on players before signing them. This I feel is evident in the fact that all of his signings to date are contributing to a so far successful campaign. The only exception so far being Earnie , however im sure that he will have his moments also.
Im genuinly excited by the way this team is being built and progressing. If we are not going to have todays big names, then I certainly feel encouraged that Malky is capable of unearthing tomorrows big names.A couple of who I believe he may already have found.

I hate to say this to all my detractors on here(not really)but i have been proven right about malky not bringing in any loan signings.remember i was telling all the rosies on here just that, over a month ago,as for the January sales, don't hold your breath

The only thing Malky is really saying here is that he is after a certain type
of player, and will not upset the apple cart by going for a 'known' star if
that player wont fit into his system and team ethos. THAT, i like!!
None of us EVER thought he was going to be given a blank cheque, and
he doesnt really give us (or any other Clubs) an indication of how much money
he's got to spend.. He'd be a dickhead if he did!!
I have a strong suspicion who he has been after, but wont add to speculation.
I think we WILL get the feller in January!

I dont care if we spent 850,000 on Miller or we spent 750,000 on Turner at least im guarnteed they want to wear the shirt week in and week out!
The FA Cup will be intresting but i dont care if we dont go far because we want to keep working in the league! The carling cup run has been exicting and because it was at the start of the season it dont bother me if we take intrest in it because the fans have been getting more games to see and they been enjoying it!
If we had the chance to buy Carlton Cole for the price and wages of Miller i would still take Miller!
Miller was the most calm player under a goal drought and he wasnt busting a gut for a goal but he was taking it time by time and now hes almost finding his feet and the top 6 teams cant handle him at the moment
Eg. Southampton, West Ham, Palace, Derby.

Miller has proved well worth the money now he's settled.
The real yardstick though is Ben Turner...
£750,000 for him is an embarassment. Malky Mackay should go cap in hand to Coventry
and apologise for daylight robbery. I'm almost ashamed

Turner looks a
£1m player already, and he's probably not really match fit yet
If we get a striker in with as much about him as Turner.... watch us fly!!!
I reckon i know who he's been sniffing after too
Tue Nov 15, 2011 8:36 pm
Turner has been great! Like Keinan when he came in!
Keinan came in during the season when he play a stack full of games walked into the team when he was fit and fitted in!
So is Turner but Turner is different class! Also the training session and fitness must be working great considering his injurys!
Cant believe the price for him hes building the price tag higher game by game!
Agreed with everything you said Taffy!

As long as he brings in the right people for the team i don't care how much he spends

I hope that Malky is not the kind of man that will say everything is okay and rosy just to keep the undoubted sense of unity the aquad has at the moment. If any obstacles did arise, I think he would keep them covered so as to not rock the boat.

???
If we have this 'undoubted sense of unity'... surely he'd be some kind of tool to say anything
to undermine it?.... and if we DO have this unity.... then surely things must be rosy in the
garden?
Mackay dont have to keep checking and double checking if things are going well. He's not
stupid. He is in a pretty powerful position right now. If he feels he's being lied to or fed a
load of bullshit... he can walk...
Bolton, Wigan, Wolves, Blackburn, leeds, etc etc etc etc...
Malky would not be waiting long.
Vincent Tan does not need to be a Football fan to see what a result he's had with Mackay

It's a bit early days for Turner , I think he needs a run of games tbf,. I agree with the Miller comments and would like us to be bring in 1 establish quality player and then a couple of players, that want to play for us and read to fight for their places.
Wed Nov 16, 2011 10:40 pm
we have got a ourselves a cracking manager who i firmly believe will get us to the premiership.
we also have a commited team of players----something that ha been missing in past seasons.
it might take a couple of seasons but things are falling into place-----malky has got it right.

Well January 2012 will be interesting.
