I personally didnt realise till I read this story that British POW were also kept in the camp but in another area compared to the Jews and treated better with Red cross parcels. The Nazis allowed a tournament and the Welsh lads there formed a team , sadly when the Russians advanced the Germans pulled out and moved the POW's out marching them to another area. Sadly most of the lads died but somehow this Newport POW survived it. He reckoned his Wife Gladys posted him cigars which he gave to the nazis in turn for a small piece of bread. This without a doubt enabled him to survive. He once gave some of his own rations to a Jew called Josef who in turn carved him a ring and gave it to him and told him never to forget him. Sadly a few weeks later Josef was gassed. This is one story of many from the war. May we never forget.
