Cain Velasquez v Junior Dos Santos

Sat Nov 12, 2011 8:35 pm

Biggest fight of the year tonight, who's watching it?

Thought I'd post a message on here to remind everyone that the free Facebook fights start at 9:30pm

http://www.facebook.com/UFC?sk=app_128953167177144

First time the UFC has been on FOX / Network TV. No doubt it'll be coming to Sky Sports in the near future too.

Surely it's the beginning of the end of boxing?

are you fkn deluded......this week we lost one of the all time greats in Smoking Joe Frazer (r.i.p) ...
the whole world payed respects to a marvelous brave man.
Lets see that happen when (and i do not wish this to happen)some MMA star passes on.. ....

This History of boxing is to rich for it to be killed off.

Cain Velasquez v Junior Dos Santos
Manny Pacquiao v Juan Manuel Marquez

put a poll out on who knows which fighters and who they would rather watch...

^^^^Come back when boxing has drawn over 220 million in a single year on PPV.

I just watched Tyson Fury in action......:(

And he is being hyped as a future champ.

But boxing, apart from HW, is alive and kicking.

MMA right now has a very strong HW roster.

Cain and JDS are young HWs, both have had less pro fights than Fury.

And I'm waiting up to watch both fights.

Please don't take my post out of context mate. It's a night where fans of both sports are gearing up to watch big fights in their respective sports and I wanted to trigger some Saturday night debate.

I'd never disrespect a sporting legend, espiecially one that has tragically passed away!

:ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

MMA isn't that big in the UK yet, but for every 1 boxing Pay Per View sold in America, they sell 8 MMA Pay Per Views.

I think there is room for both sports to co-exist but I can definately see MMA overtaking boxing as the number 1 combat sport in the next 5-10 years.

Mainly down to the fact that there is a super fight in MMA ever 2 months or so, whereas in boxing they are few and far between these days.

The more power the single man will get the more problems other men will face, as soon as certain fighter get more power and money they will demand more of everything. it happens in every sport and in 5 or 10 years from now MMA will be no different.

No offense, but I do not believe this will happen in the UFC. The fact is that in MMA no one can rule the roost or longer than a few short years. The lifespan of the fighters is much shorter. A solid Boxer can duck legitimate challengers for years...in the UFC the organization forces its fighters to take all challengers. Just look at the MMA fighters who were considered undestructable.....Frye, Gracie, Severn, Silva, Penn, Lesner, tonight Valasquez (perfect example) the list goes on, all fell within a year or two of their acsension. The only reason Couture was able to hold on so long was that the heavyweight division was week for a while. It is just simply easier to get "caught" in an armbar or choke, along with a lucky punch. The variables involved will prevent anyone from rulling the roost. In boxing everyone has a punchers chance.....in MMA everyone has a sumission, choke, kicker, or puncher's chance.
Another reason this will not happen is the stranglehold the UFC has on the sport. In boxing at least here in the States, the public lost interest because of the confussion among the differnt organizations, and the men behind the fighters who leech upon the real atheletes careers. As long as the UFC reigns as the elite, and believe me no one in America pays attention to Pride or any of the other organizations, then the leeches and title chaos are simply not there.
I don't think I even have to go into the fact that boxing has a poor reputation, at least over here. Many believe the big money fights are rigged. All you have to do is You Tube Tyson vs Spinks.
Plus when is the last time there was a fight of note on free television. The UFC understands this. They show there fights on American Television all the time. They develop their stars on television and then those stars fight in free big fights. In the 70's I remember watching Ali, Hagler, Sugar Ray, Hearns, Frazier, Forman....on free television. Now you have to pay. If boxing would develop their athletes on free television that would be a start. They just got to greedy.
Don't get me wrong I love boxing and look forward to one day watching Mayweather and Pac Man go at it. But that's the problem, it has not happened yet. :ayatollah:

I hate UFC with a passion.
Just because corruption hasn't got its mitts on it yet, people think it is the greatest sport ever.
It is simply a sport for people who used to watch the WWF wrestling.

It will never replace the sweet science, create the passion or have household name fighters like boxing has had.

Check back in about a year. I hate it but unless boxing gets it's stuff together what has already happened here will happen in the rest of the world. Like it or not boxing is breathing it's last gasps.

In 30 years or so if Cain Velasuez dies there might be the same reaction to his death as the death of Joe Frazier.

MMA or UFC mainly is taking off hugely in the US which is where the main money is. The odd boxing match gets more than one million PPV buys (Pacquiao / Mayweather) but on the whole boxing is falling. UFC is getting over a million buys regularly and people like Velasquez, JDS and Brock Lesnar are becoming household names. Where the US leads we follow. Boxing is not selling like it used to due to the practice of keeping the best boxers away from each other whereas in UFC the best fighters always fight each other. That is the beauty of there only being one main organisation that has all the best fighters locked up.

I wouldn't be so sure mate, MMA is already a massive sport in some countries.

Last year, UFC Welterweight champion George St-Pierre - won Canadian Sports Personality of the Year and Middleweight champion Anderson Silva along with Middleweight top contender Vitor Belfort are like superstars in Brazil.

Vitor Belfort and his super model wife are like the Posh and Becks of Brazil...

I think if the UK had any fighters that were serious title contenders, MMA would be a lot bigger here too. It's just a shame that our two best fighters, Michael Bisping and Terry Etim are fighting in extremely tough weight classes and will probably never win a title, although Etim can maybe develop into a high level Welterweight one day.

That's the thing ain't it. People see that it isn't huge in UK yet so think that is how it is worldwide. It's not. Around the world it is massive and getting bigger and bigger. Brock Lesnar's last 3 fights have out grossed any boxing event in the same time period.

Already has fella if you include last nights Pac JMM 3 card.

Re: Cain Velasquez v Junior Dos Santos

That's not true.

220 million made by the UFC in 2006 is still a PPV record.

Re: Cain Velasquez v Junior Dos Santos

Sun Nov 13, 2011 1:35 pm

Floyd generated 85 million against Ortiz, Pac I think made roughly the same for the Mosley fight, I would assume that last nights fight generated around 70 million throw in Canelos fights in Mexico or even Haye Klitschko and its beaten.

If you want to look at history then Lewis v Tyson made 107 million on its own. Do you really think the rest of the year didnt top that?

The 2011 average for Buyrates in the UFC currently stands at 403k Edgar Maynard 2 sold 275k. UFC PPPV are down 38% on average over last year, which dropped from the year before. While the UFC is undoubtedly a massive world wide promotion it is very dependent on its "star" names. In a sense it is exactly the same as Boxing, Take Lesnar, GSP, Silva away from UFC take Pac, Floyd and say Cotto away from Boxing and the numbers basicly mirror each other.

Also the Ufc is a promotional company, it is not a sport.
