How to Semi-Tether Jailbreak your iphone 4 or ipod/T 4thG

How to Jailbreak your iOS5 iphone4/ipod touch 4th.gen in less than 90 seconds!
Tethered Jailbreak + semi-tether. (semi-tether allows the reboot of the phone if power is lost & without the need to connect to a pc, but without the functions of safari, email & cydia+tweaks) all other functions ie. text, calls, contacts, camera work fine. This still allows you the normal use of your phone until you return home and connect and boot back into its tethered jailbreak state.
What is Tethered? Tethered simply means you have to tether (connect) your device to your pc and use (redsn0w) to boot your phone back up into its jailbroken state.
what is Redsn0w - It is the 3rd party program you download from the provided link which you use to Jailbreak your device.

Step by Step guide.
1. Download redsn0w from the links above (windows or mac version)
2. Run/extract file to your preferred location on your pc - generally after the download has finished (20 seconds) it will be in your downloads folder.
3. open the redsn0w application - and you will have a box open up that says [jailbreak] & [extras]
4. click Jailbreak
5. A new page will open asking you to make sure your phone is connected to your pc and SWITCHED OFF! (important)
6. once step 5 is complete you can either click next and follow the onscreen instruction to put your phone into DFU mode, or just do this first before clicking next ->
Put your device into DFU Mode - (hold power and home button for 10 seconds - during this time your phone will switch on, then switch off after 6 seconds, keep holding for the remaining 4 seconds)
once the 10 seconds has elapsed [which is also shown on the screen instructions] release the power (top) button but continue to hold the home (lower) button for a further 15 seconds until phone is recognised in DFU Mode)
7. Once DFU mode is established and recognised by redsn0w it will begin the Jailbreak process while you sit back and watch! it will then say on the redsn0w screen that the rest of the process takes place on the device, but leave the phone connected
as once the jailbreak is complete, you will have to reboot the phone to activate Cydia (the jailbreak store!)
8. Wait for phone to boot up. Switch off again whilst connected to PC, either close the redsnow program and reboot it, to get the extras option on the screen as mentioned in step 3. or just click [Back] if already open on your screen until you go back
to the home screen.
9. Click on [extras] chose [Just Boot] top option. Put phone in DFU mode again. as in step 6, click next and the phone will repeat the jailbreak process to boot up in its tethered state and activate cydia.
Thats it, Your phone is jailbroken - and Cydia is working on your home screen, (a brown package icon)

IF YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU MAY LOSE POWER TO YOUR PHONE EITHER ONCE A DAY AT LEAST OR ON A REGULAR BASIS I RECOMMEND YOU DONT DO THIS AND JUST WAIT A WEEK OR TWO FOR THE UN-TETHERED VERSION TO BE RELEASED. no special reboots are required to boot into a jailbroken state - you just use your phone in its normal way if its untethered.

The benefits are you can break Apples restrictions and enter the files in the phone (not manually yourself!) but through downloading customisations for your phone (from both Cydia and Installous) to change the way in which certain things work, and appear! Similar but in more detail to rooting on the android OS.
I would also like to point out that Jailbreaking IS NOT ILLEGAL! it is simply a violation of apples terms, they want you to buy everything from their store - but this allows you to add your customisations for free, or very cheaply in other cases.
It WILL void any apple warranty if you take it into the shop with the Jailbreak still present on the phone, but a simple connection, backup and restore in itunes removes ALL traces of jailbreak from the phone in less than 15 minutes. So do this if you need to return the phone to apple.
Apple has the app store and itunes. which cost money!!
Jailbreak has Cydia and Installous - which (mostly) are free for the same apps etc etc.
one example of something I did with Jailbreak is add a tweak to my phone called "IgotYa" - this will silently take a photograph from the front facing camera on your phone, as well as send the location of your phone to your email address when your unlock/passkey on your lock screen is entered incorrectly!!!! you get to see the FACE and the LOCATION of the potential thief trying to access your phone. (that as I say, is just ONE of the tweaks I've added)

IF you decide to do this - once you've completed everything successfully - you will need to add the semi tether facility into your phone.
Do this by opening cydia, going to Manage>source>edit>add - then add this repo address in : http://thebigboss.org/semitether/
then search for Semitether - and install it.

Apple have yesterday released iOS 5.0.1 (beta) to devlopers which has no new features in itunes update (when it is released as GM to public) However it does apparently iron out a few minor bugs/issues and tackles a small problem with the battery drain which was apparently causing some users to see increased power drains. I would therefore WAIT to jailbreak your device if you are going to go ahead with this semi-tethered version, rather than do this jailbreak, then have to restore your device to ios 5.0.1 and then have to re-jailbreak it all again! Best to either 1. Just wait a few days (possibly tomorrow) for iOS 5.0.1 comes out then Jailbreak, - or 2. If you are a beginner (and on my recommendation) just wait until the full UN-TETHERED version is released - which could be less than 7 days away.... then you'll have no doubt in your mind about the way you use your device.
