Loans... temporary or long term?

Only been watching the sport for just a couple of seasons now and I don't really understand the Loan System as of yet. I have tried picking things up by reading on this forum and the internet, but still it is not very clear.

If Malky were to sign a player this week, like Carl hinted, would this player be with the Bluebirds till the end of the season? Or is this player only with the club until the club who has his contract calls him back? I have also read about month long loans.

Seems to me short term loans would do more harm than good. Having a player come in as a mercenary with no real loyalty to the shirt, and taking away developmental time from some of the younger players. On the other hand if the player were with CCFC till the rest of the season with a possibility to be signed on, then I would think that would be better.

Am I getting this correctly?

well now we can only sign players for a month or until January (93 days loan is max outside of the transfer window). Where during the January transfer window we can sign players until the end of the season.

If MM didnt want to sign the player can a loan be extended once in January?
This is the bit ive never understood, I find extension of loans a bit of a weird rule
