Our Defence Tonight

Tue Oct 25, 2011 10:47 pm

..............was rock solid. i wonder if Gerard had anything to do with that?!

Our midfield force made Burnley look shite, they ran out of ideas after 20 minutes.

Had Miller been playing we would have scorched them. We had the ball on the wing or the outside of the box umpteen times BUT NO-ONE in the box.

Those Dingles are still on the way home and it's gonna be a long journey for them, always is when your team has played that bad.

Or were we that good?

How did Hudson play?

And before you ask, I am an advocate of his! :ayatollah:

Didn't play to bad tbh as Johnny said the defence looked rock solid but mind you Burnley weren't that good going forward but tbh i would see if works against Leeds now after we have kept our first clean sheet in 7 games. :ayatollah:

Hudson had 2 bad mistakes which nearly cost us goals. Fortunately he got back and made the block with 1.
I really believe he is the weak link at the back

i thought hudson was supperb tonight, won every header.

thought gerrard was poor and the reason hudson was covering was due to gerrard out of position. if brunlet pushed more then gerrard would of not lasted 90 mins without a red card

Burnley shouldn't have got rid of Eagles!
He was the magic in their midfield miss a player of his ability!

Fairplay though was really pleased with how McNaughton/Taylor kept Hines quiet.
And Hudson and Gerrard were decent kept Rodriguez quiet which was a great to see because the guy is on fire in their Carling Cup Campaign but he had one or two headers but he was kept at bay tonight!

Hudson also nearly scored! :ayatollah:

So I assume we must have played a 5-4-1 formation tonight with three CB's? I wonder if this might be a longer term solution to the goals we have been leaking recently or if it was just due to lack of suitable replacements in the squad for other positions. Good to see anyway that MM can be innovative like this and isn't just a 4-4-2 man.

5-4-1 ? I dont think so, it was a 4-5-1 3 center backs?

Sorry, only glanced at the report this morning when I was getting up and thought I saw that Hudson, Gerrard and Turner all played but I mistook Turner for Taylor so I thought we must have played two CB's and a sweeper or something!

If we're defending deep or set pieces he's grand, once he's been turned he struggles. He's a great man for blocking shots as well.

To me - both center halves seem to lose concentration in the last 10-15mins, I noticed this again last night when Burnley were pushing for the late goal both gerrard, who was giving away to many free kicks in needless positions, and Hudson who was slowly looking more jaded as the game went on kept losing out on headers and tackles towards the end. If Malky sorts this out, then we'll be a top unit at the back - but you always have that doubt at the back of your mind that either gerrard or Hudson can come up with a right howler at any time.

Although, hats off to the lads - they all put a good shift in :ayatollah:

Neither player was superb last night IMO, with both players having some very good moments and not so good moments!

Whilst I can see why Malky rested him, I was disappointed that Turner wasn't given a run out alongside Gerrard or Blake last night, to see how they performed together and whether either of these defensive pairings, would potentially work better than Turner (who is clearly going to be first choice centre back) & Hudson!

With the current squad we have I think we look pretty good playing 4-5-1, our midfield has so much energy and work so hard and I think this system will give a lot of teams problems and we have a variety of players scoring so not relying just on our strikers. As seen when we played 4-5-1 against Barnsley we tore them to shreds, when we reverted to 4-4-2, went a little tits up.... :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:
