Match report Cardiff v Barnsley 22 Oct 2011

Sun Oct 23, 2011 7:28 pm

The away fans of Barnsley were cramped into a corner of the away section. Last time this happened, a number of Cardiff City players went out on the piss pre-match night and our season was over although we did not know it at the time. Well that is what I thought of as I saw them all cramped up. Then I thought no way will that happen again with this present regime. No way.

Marshall took the place between the sticks again with McNaughton, Turner, Hudson and Taylor making up the defence line. In midfield there was the ever present line up of Whittingham, Cowie, Gunnarson and Conway. However they were joined by McPhail who seems to have made another recovery from a serious injury. Completing the line up was the lone striker Miller.

From the start Cardiff went straight on the attack. The charged the goal at the family stand ends and on 4 minutes Gunnarson lobbed the ball over the bar. It was not long before the home side took the lead when after 10 minutes Miller found himself unmarked inside the Barnsley penalty area from a Cowie pass. His first touch looked a bit too heavy but he managed to place his shot across the 6 yard area and inside the far post.

From the restart Cardiff dominated and where were not allowing the Barnsley midfield to settle. Danny Drinkwater the former Cardiff midfielder tried to take control of the game for the visitors but any possession he had he failed to make of it due to the standstill attitude of his team mates. This allowed the home side to pressure the midfield resulting in most of the play being played inside the visitors half.

Cardiff were awarded a number of corners for their pressure and from one of them Miller nearly got his second when he powerfully headed towards the Barnsley goal from a Whittingham corner that caused a great reflection save form the keeper.
Moments later Miller was forced off after colliding with Turner. He received a head wound that saw blood and had to be replaced by Mason. Within a few more moments Mason was on the score sheet. Cardiff were awarded a free kick just outside the area and the keeper could only palm away Whittingham kick. The ball fell nicely to Mason who had no trouble tucking it away.

From the restart Barnsley were awarded a free kick about 10 yards outside the Cardiff area. From the kick everyone just watch as the ball ended up in the back of the Cardiff net. Drinkwater fancied his chances but his kick received a wicked deflection that left Marshall helpless.

However within minutes Cardiff gained their two goal lead. Literally from their first attack from the restart Gunnarson picked the ball up 20 yards out, flick it in the air then volleyed that gave the Barnsley stopper no chance.
The entertaining half ended with Cardiff 3-1 up.

Just as everyone was settling down for the second half as the game restarted Barnsley then had a chance to get back in the game. Marshall collected the ball on his 6 yard area only for the referee to say it was a back pass. From the free kick on the 6 yard line Drinkwater smashed the ball against the crossbar.
From this scare Cardiff then dominated the game with McPhail running the show in midfield. On the hour mark they increased their lead when Cowie, beating the offside trap, collected a pass from Mason and only had the keeper to beat. He did this with ease as he showed he has a good bit of pace in him as well as clever footwork. He rounded the goalkeeper and slid the ball into the net.
Cardiff continued their dominance and it came as no surprise when they got another goal. This time Taylor decided to join the attack and sent a tempting cross in which Gunnarson met to score his second of the afternoon on the 71st minute .

Cardiff looked like they had a few more goals in them with McPhail and Cowie owning the midfield. However McPhail started to tire and on 77 minutes was replaced by Earnshaw. Cardiff seemed to switch off after the substitution and this allowed Barnsley to get more involved. They scored two goals, one on 82 and the other on 86 minutes to make the score respectable for them. Sloppy defending and a loss of direction in midfield and once again Cardiff had let 2 goals in a short space of time.
The game ended without any further incident as the referee brought an entertaining afternoon of football to an end with the score 5-3 in the home sides advantage.

Summing up. Entertaining game again just like the Peterborough game but this time the right score. We have played some difficult sides this season and lately perhaps some of the easier ones. Most would say we were unlucky at Peterborough to lose. Don’t think anyone would say we were fortunate to win this one. I would say from what I have seen this season we are above average and will get better. We might even get better without additions.
