Welsh rugby fans

Sat Oct 15, 2011 6:40 am

I've just been in the Chinese cafe on Wood Street to get my bacon baguette for breakfast before I start work and the place was choc full of rugby fans on their way to the stadium for the showing of the game. To say that they looked like clowns on the way to the circus is no exaggeration at all. Jesters hats, the cheap market Wales shirts with Wales across the front instead of the sponsors logo, people who've never been anywhere near a rugby game in their lives and women in daffodil hats. It was all on show. You really do despair for the future of wales if these people are representative of us.

However, the most surreal sight was on the corner by the Vue cinema, 4 people dressed head to toe in Welsh colours speaking German. Yes, rugby's even caught the imagination of the Germans

That's the only thing I dislike about welsh rugby success, is that it bring out a new level of plastic fan......a fan that only knows the name of henson and lickwle shane, who knows absolutely no rules, has never been to one club game, and is just there for a pissup!

However, I am absolutely buzzing today......what a day......Wales in a semi this morning, the welsh flag flying over Downing Street, my beloved city at home this arvo, pub crawl with the boys immediately after, and a full day without the missus.....woohoo.... :D

Sounds like a good day. But it's amazing how many people are turning out just because the tickets are free. It makes me wonder how many would be there even if there was a nominal fee for them.

Like you say, I'm very excited about this. I think we can get a good result against the French and, if we get to the final and get NZ, I don't see why we can't beat them, too. They're rugby's equivalent of Brazil, usually flatter to deceive in tournaments and, lathough we haven't beaten them since 1953, they have usually been in one-off games. We are in a tournament now where we have momentum, a situation we've rarely been in when we've come up against them, so this could be the time to finally shake off the NZ hoodoo. Assuming we both win our games, of course

Exactly, with the pressure on NZ, and subject to us getting to the final, it could be our best opportunity to beat them and how sweet would that be?! From here on in the result is a lottery, all form goes out the window, allez le rouge!!!!!
