WORK THIS OUT

Wed Oct 05, 2011 8:13 pm

you see a shirt for £97 but have no cash so you borrow £50 from your mum and £50 from your dad = £100. you buy the shirt & have £3 change so you give your dad a £1 and mum a £1 and keep the other pound for yourself. now you owe mum £49 & dad £49. £49+£49=£98 + your £1 = £99. So wheres the missing £1.? :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

There is no missing pound.

Owe parents £98, having repaid £2.

Shirt cost £97. You've £1 left. Which equals £98.

There is no missing £1
You borrowed two times £49 pound = £98, and spend £97 pound, and now have an extra pound to keep for yourself.
You are adding up what you owe, plus what you have which doesnt work, as there is no £100 pound. Once you give them the £1 back if you are adding up what you spent you should either add up 49 +49 = shirt + 1 change or if you are adding up what you borrowed originally that is 50+50 = shirt +3 change

They are two difference equations cleverly put together to make it look like there is a missing pound :ayatollah: :ayatollah:
