It depends on what you want to get out of it.
You won't get served in a bar if you are 18, you will probably be asked for ID if you look under 30.

The weather can be really hot or really cold on the East Coast, Mid West with probably 2 windows of great weather so if you intend on camping...take that into consideration.

Taking secondary roads rather than the main highways, would enable you to see more of the country as you are driving.

at the age of 18 and 20 you might have trouble renting a car or crossing state lines in a rented car

Yeh you will be massively restricted in the US while you are both under 21! I would suggest going to OZ first where you can do pretty much anything and then the US when you are older! OZ is an amazing place with loads to do and is perfect for travellers! Im not too familiar with any backpacking packages for the US, though my freinds did the west coast and went down to mexico and had the time of their lives! greyhound coaches are easy and cheap to get around but you can also expect to come across some dodgy characters at times too!

My friends and I drove 1-40 from Nashville, Tennessee to California when we were 20. We had a blast and stopped at the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and other places. On the way back we took 1-24 which took us through St Louis.

It was a cheap trip, granted we had our own vehicle, and at that time we were not that interested in alcohol. Hotels can be had for $50-60 dollars a night, unless you are brave and then you can stay in a local inn for like $40. Right now gas is hovering around $3 a gallon in the States,

Where are you planning on going? I would avoid driving through Kansas, or Oklahoma.....whew...long stretches of nothing.

The West is very nice, and the weather is not that bad. Out west it is not humid like it is in the east. Route 66 is a fun laid back way to see the west, but be prepared to obey the speed limit, and slow down in every small town along the way.

We travel mostly to the Gulf Coast from Nashville.

Car rental is going to be your biggest problem.

something like 99% of all car rentals demand you be atleast aged 21 before renting a car,

as said above best place is oz, my mate went for 6months, and on day 2, was earning $14 a hour and because he was from wales and wore a cardiff shirt i lent him loads of people bought him drinks, and stuff.....city is strangely huge in auss, go for it

No point in going unless you're over 21 ;)

Now, this was a long time ago, when I was a student, maybe 23 years (!), but this may still be possible.

There are companies which used to specialise in car delivery, usually the family's second car, normally the wife's runabout, and you can ring them up and ask what deliveries they have available.

It's usually from East to West coast, and happens because people, more often than not, retire to the sunny states. You used to be able to find them in the local yellow pages, called something like AA Driveaway or similar.
Two of my Uni mates delivered a car from Connecticut to Washington state, and proceeded to visit every possible attraction on their way and did around 5,000 miles, when they had been expected to only travel 3,500 ! There wasn't a penalty in those days, as the family was just delighted to have the car in one piece.

The cost of doing this, I hear you ask ? Well, at the time it was 100 dollar deposit, and you pay for the gas, as our friends across the pond call petrol. That is true.

Downside - the trips are obviously one way, so you'd have to find another way back from where you came.

I did it once myself, from Portland in Oregon to New Mexico, good fun and very cheap.

If I was a student going to the states again now and it was still an option, I'd do it again, like a shot !
