" Match report Hull v Cardiff 1st Oct 2011 "

To hell and back. Well that is what our trip was like to Hull this weekend. A good trip spoilt by terrible refereeing. A decision that has gone against the spirit of refereeing.

In goal for Cardiff was Marshall and at the back he there was Blake, McNaughton, Hudson and Gerrard. Once again Malki went with 5 across the midfield with Mason, Whittingham, Kiss, Cowie and Gunnarson leaving Miller up front on his own.

Cardiff started well and attacked the goal the opposite end to where the 700 travelling Cardiff fans watched. Within the 1st minute they won a corner. However that was a false dawn as very soon afterwards it was the home side that took control.
Cardiff then suffered a setback as Miller went off with a groin injury. He was replaced by the 17 year old Ralls who had just signed a professional contract with the club 2 days earlier.

The crowd though had to wait for 20 minutes before Hull created their first chance. From a move down the Cardiff left where the visitors where left exposed, the Tigers won a free kick just outside the area. From the restart marshal was forced to palm the ball over the bar.

Hull enjoyed some sustained pressure in the Cardiff half but were forced to take their chances from distance. The nearest they came to scoring in this period was a volley from the D area when went high and wide of the goal.

Cardiff did manage to get the ball into the Hull half but hardly pressed the Hull goalkeeper. In fact we had to wait 30 minutes before we saw a real chance and that came from a Whittingham corner that Gerrard headed wide.

The game did look like it had 0-0 written all over it and most City fans would have taken that. However with 6 minutes to go before half time the home side took the lead. Hull moved the ball around the Cardiff area and Gerrard backed off his marker and that allowed the striker to toe poke the ball between Marshall and the goalpost for a goal.

From the restart Cardiff were cold and Hull took advantage. From a run inside their own half the Hull midfielders worked the ball up to the Cardiff area only to see a snapped shot go over the bar. Cardiff struggled to keep the home side at bay for the rest of the half.

The second half started with the home side on the ascendency. They went close within the first few minutes of the restart with a 25 yard volley that went wide and a shot inside the area that forced a good save from Marshall.

Then Cardiff started to control the midfield a lot better and made progress outside their half. However the finishing attacks on goal lack quality with none of the shots troubling the Hull keeper.

Then on the 62 minutes mark a piece of quality finally came from a Cardiff player this season. McNaughton found Ralls in space about 25 yards out. Ralls looked up and saw the home keeper off his line. He steadied himself and placed his shot over the stranded keeper for a spectacular goal.

Although from the start Hull nearly took the lead it was Cardiff who went for it and should have been awarded a penalty a few moments later. Kiss found himself in the 6 yard area but was closed down. He passed the ball back only to have it passed back to him in what looked like an offside position. However the ball had touched a Hull defender and the lineman did NOT raise his flag.

With the ball at Kiss feet he took a step back beating his Hull marker who stuck his foot out bringing Kiss down. The referee pointed to the penalty spot. The Hull defenders tried like babies, went running to the linesman who was forced to call the referee over. This resulted in the referee reversing his penalty decision. Shocking decision and this goes to show how bad the refereeing is in this league.

Cardiff never recovered from that and most of the 50/50 decisions did not go our way. To rub salt into the wound Hull made a substitution and the replacement went on to score the winning goal within a minute of coming on.

The game ended with the home side winning 2-1 or should have that been the linesman winning.

Summing up. A good day spoilt by bad refereeing. I don’t think we will see an incident like that again. Thank God for the break because once again we find ourselves suffering with too many injuries. Also it does not help when we get officials like that.

Blatant penalty not given in the last few minutes when Whitts' shot was paried away by a Hull player's upraised hands.

Right in front of the ref.

Stonewall!

Decision - corner!

Did not see it from where I was but saw the reaction of the players.
