Its the reason that Ridsdale/Jones never cashed in on him.

yup agree with everything your saying here but we are talking bout scotland not brazil. In my opinion i think hes just as good as hutton and crainey but yet they are picked because one is in the prem(fair enuff)and the other used to be in the prem.

modern fullbacks need to be good in possesion nowadays.....only real defenders are centre backs

MM is clearly a bg fan of playing a tight diamond in midfield with the full backs overlapping.
Quality distribution from the full backs is vital to that formation.

What's the point in having wingers then?

They arent wingers really though are they? Whitts and Cowie are more narrow midfielders. They very rarely go round the outside like Burke or Routledge used to. (I have said in another thread that someone who can go past people it is the one loan signing I would love to see.)
We are playing a bit like Chelsea did with a solid midfield and Ashley Cole and whoever playing very high up the pitch, going wide. I think its a reason why we are looking far more solid and workman like.
It is the reason (IMO) that MM is picking Taylor before Quinn/Blake, when fit, because he fits that role.

Obviously Conway is more of a winger but he was still playing very narrow, even when we play 5 in midfield.

Mate, as I said, I am a huge fan of Super Kev, but I think we are all a little blind to his downside. Which is that his distribution is often lacking.
